Travel insurance for long-stay

My DD is heading to the US on Saturday to college for a year. Does anyone know where I can get insurance? My health service provider includes a policy with our cover, but there is a 31 day limit on it. If anyone could advise and save me thrawling through the small print it would be much appreciated. Essentially, she doesn't have very many valuables, just the usual laptop, and a nice watch. However, I just want to take the precaution of covering theft/accident in case something happens on campus.

    Thanks in advance

Taking out a homeowners/renters insurance policy (to cover the contents of her home) with a US company is not expensive or hard. It would cover her if her home was broken into and items were stolen, or there was a fire and she lost her personal possessions....that kind of stuff. But they aren't going to cover her if she loses her watch, or she drops & breaks her lap top when she is in college. Will she be living in a campus dorm, or getting her own place? If she is living on campus, the college authorities may be able to advise her on insurance cover for personal items if she is living in the dorms. If she is getting her own place, then its a matter of getting out the phone book and ringing around.

I'm not sure from your post if she needs health insurances too. If she does, health insurance is trickier, as taking out an individual policy can be very expensive. Has she contacted the college that she will be attending, to see if they offer any deals for students, or are in partnership with insurance companies that do so. Most US kids attending college would be on their parents policy, just as they would be here. That won't be an option for your daughter, so she'll need to source her own health insurance.

Give usit a call, they do long term insurance, my sister got it when they went to Australia for a year. If you want separate health insurance vhi do one that allows you to be abroad for a year

Thanks, she'll be living on campus in dorms and she has the very expensive compulsory health insurance. I'll advise her to chat with admin regarding a general policy. I'm just thinking of replacement of all her clothes etc in case of some kind of disaster. I phoned my insurance broker yesterday and he said that essentially there was nothing to be organised from here. I'm sure it'll be fine, its just when I saw everything packed I realised just how much it would cost to replace. She's having to take all her clothes, summer and winter, and the idea of having to replace them all frightened the life out of me!
