Working in Insurance

    Hi everyone,

I have got offered a job in insurance starting on Monday in administration. They said their will be some calls but its mainly on the admin side of things.

I have no experience in insurance or qualifications which they knew off but they still offered me the job. I was told their is exams that I have to pass in the first three years and they pay for them as long as I pass them first time of asking if not I pay for the repeat.

I currently work in two work from home jobs and another job that is just down the road from my house. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't handy.

My predicament is that the insurance job is minimum wage, 17,000 a year until I pass the exams and that can take a few years so I would be on considerably lower money then what I'm on now, I'm also worried that I won't be very good at the job and get sacked seems as I have no experience and then I would be left with noting since I will have to leave the other jobs I have.

My girlfriend reckons I should go with the insurance job as its stable and a chance for progression, I'm thinking that way myself too but just wanted to see what other people thought.

    Thanks for reading.

I worked in insurance for a year (motor insurance) with Aviva back in 2012. I found it very stressful and not worth the €18,500 salary. I would not go back and work in insurance. Our training was quite poor and there was very little support. I still feel like pulling my hair out when I think of it.

I've worked in insurance for the past 5 years and it can be stressful but the money is quite good once you gain experience. It really depends what you want to do within the industry and there are plenty of jobs available, I get 2 or 3 calls a week from companies and recruiters looking for me to switch.
The exams aren't too bad if you put in the study. There are 3 sitting per year and 6 exams in total. Once you have passed them all you get you're CIP (certified insurance practitioner) qualification but in reality you are only require to pass the first 3 in the time frame, this gives you an APA (approved product advisor) qualification which is all the central bank requires at the minute.
You need to consider what route you want your career to take, the 3 main areas in insurance (broadly speaking) are Sales, Claims and Underwriting. If your strengths lie in admin claims might suit you. Once you have some experience you can easily move jobs for more money, if you are in Dublin I'd expect 24k - 50k depending on the role and your experience. A good sales agent can make around the 50k mark including commission with the right company.

Hope that's of some help, good luck wth he decision what ever you choose
