    Hi all,

Currently driving a BMW 116i under my moms policy and looking to change cars. I'm looking for some suggestions on what other people on here around my age are driving. I am driving now 2 years. Looking at BMW 520D's, etc.. Any suggestions or good insurance companies that would cover me on higher engine cars?

    Thanks,

    Curtis

Assuming you'd get a quote are you willing to pony up the 4k+ EUR per year for it?

i realise i'm starting to sound my age, but why not a small perfectly ordinary car and then you'd probably get a reasonable insurance quote. you're only 19, plenty of time to drive bigger engined cars in my humble opinion.

Well currently I'm paying 1300 or so on the 1 series but since I'm turning 20 soon I expect it to drop which is why I'm also looking for a bigger car.

Well I've been driving smaller cars for the last 2 years and just looking for a change. I like the big cars and since I'm turning 20 soon I'm looking for something bigger and better to move onto.

how many years no claims do you have? if you've just been a named driver so far, your quote on a 520d will easily be over 3 grand

    Check out - http://www.4thelads.ie/

    It's with Pat Britton Insurance

or No Nonsense - I think you can take a higher excess with them to reduce the premium

Do agree with previous poster though, build up the NCB before you go to 2.0l there is plenty time ahead of you...

It does not drop that quickly esp. not when you go up in size of car in this market and happen to be your age.

I've just over 2 years on named experience and will be staying as a named driver in the new car too.

Be very careful, the insurers are well aware of this 'trick' and it will invalidate insurance for you and whoever is the named policyholder, then when you next apply for insurance you will have to declare having had a policy voided - then you will know what a high premium is!

in addition most insurers will charge based on the highest rated driver on the policy so there is little saving on the gross premium (apart from using someone elses NCB) and, you are not building up your own NCB either.

Get a policy in your own name on a 'normal' car, build up experience and your own NCB and off you go.

You are playing a very risky game here...

That old knack doesn't work very well anymore and is quite dangerous. You really are better off going about it the "hard way" and building up your NCB. Your time will come, lad. :D

I'm not driving the car every day just when it's needed. My mom is still the main driver of the car. We already went through that with the insurance company because my mom has another car and they're okay with it. I might look into getting my own policy on the 1 series though and take it from there.

build up your own no claims on a small car. nothing embarrassing about being in a 1 litre yoke when you're 20, everyone knows that's just how it goes

Before people comment can they read the previous comments. I have been looking into getting my own insurance policy but its not really needed right now as I only drive the car a maximum of two days a week while the main driver uses it the rest of the time. We are looking into new cars that we can purchase that I would be able to get insurance in.

I'm looking into getting either a 320D or 520D or an A4 but i'm looking to see if anyone on here has been in the same position at around 19/20.

Also looking to see if anyone has experience with third party expansions and if your able to get it at 19/20. Wouldn't be using it every day but would be useful for the type of business I want to get into.

Third part extensions usually come into play when you have insured a car in your own name. Only some companies will allow this for under 25's. Probably not the most sensible route to go down given what you've said on here however.

Yeah I've been looking there in insuring the BMW in my own name and it's not as expensive as I expected so I might look into that option so as far as I'd know it would come with a third party expansion. I don't know if AXA allow it for under 25's though, no real info on their website about it might give them a call.

AXA dont allow under 25s with third party extension.

Liberty gave it to me at 24. However they don't give it to named drivers and the other car has to eb NCTd and Taxed. Road legal in other words.

Probably also has to be insured by it's registered owner.
