6 month braces vs Traditional braces - advice?

    Hi there,

I have been thinking about getting braces but unsure which to get. I am 25.

I got told I am a good candidate for 6 month braces. I only want top arch as I only have one, badly crooked front tooth.

The only thing is that I have quite an overbite so even with straight teeth, my smile looks a little awkward. I understand that 6 month braces won't correct my bite. I got quoted 1600e for top arch 6 month braces, 2000e for top arch traditional braces and 3,500e for traditional train track braces on both arches for 18-20 months.

Which option do you think I should go for? Naturally, I want to go for the 6 month braces as its hard to imagine how much different I would look with a different bite and obviosly for cost and convenience reasons. I have a pretty small set mouth so don't know how much bite correction will actually make a difference but maybe it would.

I suppose I am inclined to go for 6 month braces but I just don't want to waste 1600e thinking maybe I should went for the more expensive, tedious option. I have two front crowns and possibly a bridge/implant so suppose money is a big factor to consider!

    Appreciate any advice.

    Many thanks,
    Susan.

    Hi Susan,

It sound like you know what the advantages and disadvantages are. You should also consider that retention is an issue, and that without correcting the bite you may be more likely to relapse after the braces come off.

So long as you are going to a dentist that provides all types of braces you will get good advise. All treatment types can work well if applied to the correct person by the correct person. So long as the dentists/orthodontist has explained the pros and cons and you are happy to accept whatever compromise is needed you will make a good decision.

    Good luck
