Campsite vs Wild camping

Going to head somewhere in the country this weekend to camp for 2 nights. We're between minds about whether to book and pitch in a campsite or to 'wild-camp', as I am finding it hard to justify paying €40 for two nights for a single tent on some grass!! We are thinking Clare, Doolin etc. Are there generally areas to pitch a tent without hassle, or how do you decide where to set up camp? Haven't camped in a tent before, have gone in a campervan a couple of times with relatives but that has always been to sites as they needed electricity, water etc. Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

If you haven't camped before, go to a site with toilets, running water etc. Start easy and work up to wild camping, which for many here means lightweight, self sufficient and low visibility.

Thank you for your reply. By wild camping, I meant pitching in a non-designated area having gotten permission of course, apologies.

Glad to know my question wasn't totally ridiculous! I've booked a campsite in Doolin for Friday & Saturday night, hoping I won't be leaving on Sunday feeling totally ripped off!! Also hoping the weather holds up, but I have my doubts. :( Hope you get to head somewhere nice! :)

pitching in a non designated location (farmers field or sand dune maybe?) still means you have to source drinking water, a toilet, etc. For the sake of €40, I'd recommend you do a couple of campsite trips before going off-grid.

I agree,go campsite route first then wildcamp

I do both campsites with a tent and wildcamp with a hammock and tarp,I feel safer in the woods than at home these days with break ins etc

    ?
not much to it for a night or two :)
find a place and stick a tent in it , you can even buy water and toilet roll from a garage or spar , plenty of them around.
    not exactly wild or off-grid;)

seeing as you really have not camped before i would go camping in a campsite first. see it as a test as to how you and the equipment holds up. You will appreciate the showers and toilets.

Its a bit of fun too
