Insurance Question

Rang my insurance broker today to get some information.

They told me my policy was cancelled 6 months ago when I returned an old disc to them and nobody checked it. So basically I was driving around for 6 months with no car insurance.

They have seen and admitted their error. Have offered to reinstate my cover but want me to pay €140 until my official renewal.

What would be my recourse here? Who could I complain to? I am thinking if I was stopped by the cops, no insurance, car seized or worse I had an accident.

Pay the 140, and thank your lucky stars you weren't pulled in the meantime, or had an accident. When renewal time comes about, shop around for competence.

I'd also look into how it might affect NCB. You get this for accident-free insured driving.

Why would you return an old disc to them? Surely that is an indication you wish to cancel the policy and direct debits .

I thought that, but for the life of me I have no idea why I returned it. Bearing in mind that disc expired 3 months previous.

Did they give you a pro-rata refund after the "cancellation", if you paid in one lump originally?

There are three stages for a complaint:
    1 - informal to provider
    2 - formal to provider
    3 - formal to ombudsman

It's common enough for insurers to request old discs back (for destruction) after a change of particulars. Perhaps the Op thought this was the case for expired discs also.

They wouldn't have request the return of a disc that had expired three months previously which is what the OP sent them.

I know, its mad. I honestly cant remember. Anyway, insurance company wanted some mad amount of money so I got new policy and made sure my NCB would be intact.
