I'm no expert but,Most breeders sell rams as ram lambs. Any hoggets knocking around could be left over ones that didn't sell the previous year, or possibly ones born late. Only exception is llyens, they cannt get them registered until they reach hogget age as far as I know.

Not necessarily leftovers from the previous year. Some pedigree breeders specialise in selling hoggets and don't sell any lambs

If the hogget was born in December, January or February it should have been sold as a lamb.

I would only consider a hogget if it was born in March or April.

But I would prefer a ram lamb.

    What do you think?

If you bargain him down you might get them for 100 and then the luck penny aswell.

Wicklow cheviot breeders only sell hoggets, not sure if it's a society rule or not.

I sell hoggets here, most would be April born but some January. Often Jan are pick of bunch as I have the pick of lambs for my own use and then often sell them as hoggets. Think knowing your breeder is lot more important than worrying about hoggets or lambs, personally I'd prefer running hoggets with commercials .

Surely a hogget is a safer bet? You know what their teeth are like, and rams change a lot in their youth. I often seen a fine ram lamb make a bad ram.

How many times have you sheared a great ram lamb the following spring only to wonder where the great went.
Pick you breeder and ram carefully. A hogget will be able to cover more ewes than a ram lamb, a ram lamb should be used sparingly in his first year.
Pedigree breeders will always try to buy a ram lamb to get the best genetics(but that is a debatable point)

Everyone thinks differently but a Hoggett will serve at least 35 ewes at a minimum;Ram lambs can be quite soft, biggest thing is to know the breeders reputation you are buying from.

Hogget all the way. Too many lambs pushed too hard and go backwards unless pampered.

Heard a neighbours story today about a hogget ram thrown up cos of a "windy bag"?
    Is that only one testicle?
