Problem with Vodafone Fibre in evenings.

Hi guys looking for suggestions. I have vodafone fibre in the apt. Getting ~90-94Mb on speedtest during the day. In the evenings this drops dramatically sometimes to 6-8Mb download. The same pattern applies whether I am using Wifi or wired connection. I usually notice it on the PS4 first.

I have tested with Wifi disabled on the router and still same results
I have tested with different cables and different devices.
Restart of router does not make a difference.

I have setup a samknows box to monitor the connection and can see the same pattern.

    https://flic.kr/p/xdp3As

There has been no one in the house for the last couple of nights and samknows is still reporting the same problem. This is the only device on the network.

The vodafone support changed the profile to 85Mb to see if that made a difference and told me they could not see a problem on the line. Basically they were no help at all.

Wondering of someone has any other suggestions.

    Cheers Heroics

When it gets bad login to the modem and check SNRs, ensure both are at least 9dB and hopefully 11+ if theve scaled you back.

Assuming no fault in the copper (which would show above) the next step is the handoff point between eircom and Vodafone. If theres congestion there you could see this kinda behaviour. Have you sent Vodafone those graphs?

Yes I have noticed this as well with my Vodafone fttc bb and it was driving me crazy.

I think I solved it but its not to technical and might be a coincidence. But I just moved the modem. Problem was I think my copper phone line going into the modem was stretched and bent but moving it solved this. As you might know cables if bent too severely or kinked can f***up the signal. I have seen high end hi-fi interconnects come in meter long cigar boxes just in Oder to keep them straight and the signal as pure as possible.

This doesn't explain the time of day drop so what I might be suggesting is bulls**t(I am no comms expert) but my BB is working better than ever now

Lately (the past couple of weeks) I've noticed higher pings in the evenings which weren't there before which has reduced the speeds dramatically.

Is it contention with more people signing up for fibre? I didn't think there was contention with fibre?

Thansk for the suggestions. @eco_mental only have one phone socket in the house and it looks to be ok to me.

@ED_E I will check SNRs when the issue happens in the evening and let you know.
I suggested to the support guy in vodafone that I could send the graphs all he said was that he would only take info from the vodafone speedtest on their website so I had to ring back next day with the results from that. surprise surprise they had the same results and that was when they reduced the speed to 85Mb.

Going to ring them again today and see if they have any other suggestions. I was wondering myself about whether their network was struggling with the number of fibre customer signing up. As well as the drops in speed in the evening about 4-6 weeks ago I noticed that the average latency on the teste jumped from 12-14ms to 22-25ms as a base line during the day.

High pings again tonight. Anyone else? In Dublin 3.

Sorry not at home tonight to check but I had an eircom engineer ring me today to say he was investigating a fault on my line. Does not seem to have made a difference because the graph from samknows tonight at 8 is starting to dip again. And since he was out could be a coincidence but latency was 20-22ms but since 4PM its 28-30 does not look like much but its 25-30% increase. I'll get more reports in an hour.

High pings again this evening- 98ms. Bloody contention on the line when I thought/presumed with fibre there would be none. Anyone else experiencing same on Vodafone fibre in Dublin 3?

In the mother in laws in dun laoghaire. Vodafone as well. Keeps dropping Internet connection. Log into router and it says connected to Internet but in diagnostics can't ping anything. Give it 5 mins and then back to normal. Happened 3 times last night and happened again tonight twice. No problem connecting to the router itself only getting out to Internet. Wifi on laptop says connected but no internet access. Real pain in the ass

101ms for me just there on speedtest. I'm using Google DNS. Wonder would reverting back to Vodafone DNS improve things or does it matter?

Did another soeedtest just there, ping of 75ms downstream of 4.49 Mbps where I normally get 46 Mbps and a ping of 25ms.
The connection in the evenings lately is terrible- WTF is gonna on??

I rang Vodafone again on Friday and the guy told me sounded like congestion on the exchange that I'm connected to. He said he'd log a ticket to have it looked at. Problem is most people don't notice/complain to Vodafone when there is a problem. Looked at the stats for last night and the speed dropped on the 9:00 and 10:00 test to <10Mb. 11:00 was back to 80 and by midnight I was back getting >90. Only device on the network was they samknows box and that's wires directly to router.

Will ring them today myself as it's getting worse and more frequent.

Ping 24ms just there which is normal. I rang them this morning and they logged it with Wholesale.

Ping times ok last night too. I noticed that the connection was reset remotely yesterday afternoon which I expect was Vodafone/Eircom. Vodafone said they'd send someone to the exchange/cab.

I'll keep an eye on it going forward. Might just have been a port issue or they switched me to a different port.

Hope that sorts it for you :)

They haven't been able to sort it for me. Apparently an engineer had a look at the line/exchange but it made no difference. Last night download dropped to 5Mb and latency was up to 70ms also getting ~1% packet loss on the 22:00 and 23:00 test

Strange. I'll check again tonight between those times and see. Has anything changed with your internal wiring to make a difference? If it's external it's their problem they should fix it. I'm not sure what they need to do in the cab or exchange to fix it but you would expect them to know. I got a text off Vodafone today to say it was fixed so we'll see.

No nothing has changed. Only have the 1 point in the house for the connection. Don't even have a phone just the Internet.

I'll monitor rest of week and get back o to them.

Ran a Speedtest just there - ping was an acceptable 32ms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,878 ✭✭✭heroics

Cheers I just did same. Ping was a bit high 40-45 but download had dropped to 5mb. I couldn't host a game on the PS4 cause Internet connection was not good enough

this sounds like congestion in the service provider core network. If the problem was on your line it would not be limited to the specific times you mention, but would be happening all the time. Most likely traffic being carried back from the exchange to the Service Provider core is congested as normal traffic patterns spike for broadband between 8pm and midnight.

When congested you will get high latency and packet loss as packets are queued on the congested port. When they test your line they will find nothing wrong as I think they only check signal levels for your line which would be fine.

If this is the case, they would need to add capacity to their uplinks from the exchange

Thanks losts. That's what I believe as well but at a loss of how to put pressure on them. The last tech I spoke to on the phone said to me it sounded like congestion at the exchange links

L2TP handoff may not be at the exchange but deeper into the network. But same applies. Its a job for level2 and level3 support. The people you talk to need to escalate it up the chain.

I've noticed the same the last few nights. Ping is always less than 20ms and as low as 9ms but at night it's in the late 40's as high as early 60's. Profile is set at 30-8 but download drops to about 5mb and upload stays around 6mb

Just in case anyone is interested :) I got onto vodafone again. last Thursday and the guy said he changed something. Told me he put me on an 85Mb profile. (Previous guy said he had done this as well) Since then I have been getting 81/18 consistently 24 hours a day. Only drop was for 1 test and that was to 58mb. Fingers crossed its resolved now.

Good stuff. Were you always on that profile? How are the ping times in the evenings?

Last guy said he had put me on that profile but it had made no difference. This time seems to have worked. Ping is <22 all the time for the last 7 days. Dropping to 12 some days. Highest in evening was 33 Ms

Were you on a higher profile before and they dropped you to a fixed profile?

Looks like it. I was getting >90 most of time except the evenings. Seems putting me on fixed 85 has helped

I've noticed that about the fixed vs variable profiles. The fixed profiles have a lower ping vs the higher/auto profile.
