Recruitment agents and salary negotiations

    Hi guys

    Just wondering if anyone has any experience of salary negotiation with agents? Are they normally on the side of the employer (i.e. trying to get the deal done at the lowest salary possible) or the employee (trying to get the best deal for the candidate)? I guess ultimately they want to get a deal done, so maybe somewhere in the middle? I have no experience of this - I guess if they are paid a % of the salary as the finders fee it is in their interest to maximise the salary. Is this a common arrangement?

    I work in recruitment.

    I'm on the side of the candidate mostly. I work tech roles so it's a candidate market - a candidate could have 2+ offers on the table at once to choose from so it's worth the client's while to make their offer more attractive.

    To be completely accurate, I'm on the side that makes everyone happy.

    If I know that the maximum salary is X and the hiring manager isn't going to go above it, even for Miracle Candidate, I'm going to try to keep the candidate at X. I'll be honest about it though - there's no point in messing about.

    If the salary is open or there's a range, I'll go for as much as I think the candidate can realistically get. Sometimes people will ask for +lolz salary when they're just not worth it. If you don't have a senior level of experience, you probably won't get a senior salary (it can happen though, I could tell you stories!)

    The ideal outcome is when the candidate gets a bump on their previous salary and the client gets a brilliant hire at the market level of salary.

    Actually, salary negotiation is one of my favorite bits of the process so I usually get a good deal here.

    E.g., just recently, the client wouldn't go above X for the offer but I negotiated a salary review after 3 months where the candidates salary will go up to X+12% if they're doing well. :) Compromise! Everyone ended up happy and it's all in writing so no one can back out.

    Oh and yes, it's X% fee of the salary. This varies wildly from client to client, even from role to role but I suppose the average is 15% for IT roles. This could be different for other sectors.
