Meter installed, bill is unmetered

Asking a question on behalf of my in-laws. There is a meter installed outside their house, but they are being charged the unmetered amount (i.e. €64 per quarter). Understandably, they are a bit irked about this as they believe the value of water consumed to be less than the capped amount.

Why would be they on an unmetered bill, when there is a meter installed?

Appreciate any insight that you can offer.

Metering isn't coming in til next year, that's why. Everyone is getting flat/estimated charges til then.

Incorrect. If your usage is less than the flat rate, then you get charged the metered rate.

I have a meter and have received two metered bills so far - which thankfully have been less than the flat rate charge.  Maybe it's like with the electric and you might received one metered bill and then the next might be an estimated bill if the meter reader didn't get to their area, but it will all level out when they get their next bill and it is metered!

I'm being charged a metered rate, which is great. Our usage was €24 for Q1 and €20 for Q2. Much better than being on the flat rate, which is why I'm asking the question.

Just a question - has the person registered with IW?
Understand if you have not, and have an installed meter, that IW will charge you the capped amount regardless of usage.
If true, then I think IW dropped the ball on this - they should issue actual bills if below the capped amount, might encourage people to pay.....

    Hi dudara,

    Thanks for contacting us.

The meter in question may have been installed during the first billing cycle which would have resulted in an assessed bill being issued.
In order for us to investigate further, we would advise that they contact us here or call 1890 448 448.

    I hope this helps,

    Kind regards,

    Aaron

    Hi Aaron,

Having spoken to them, my understanding is that the meter has been installed for circa 5 years. I believe it was installed by the relevant County Council.

I will ask them to ring Irish Water and discuss this with a rep.

    Registered/unregistered they'll receive a bill regardless.

The previous meters are all being ripped up and replaced.

    Unbelievable. I know.

And yet some (albeit a an ever increasing minority) still support this sham.
