How much of a raise should I ask for?

This may seem like one of those threads that I don't really want to know the answer to, but I can assure you it is because I have no idea how much to ask for.

I'm good at my job. I earn €9.90 an hour, and I work about 130 hours a month but it's not enough anymore. I asked for a raise and I'm waiting to hear back. He did offer me a raise when I resigned in February, but I turned him down because I was moving abroad. Something terrible happened which meant that I could not permanently stay abroad, so I had to get my job back and he was nice enough to oblige me.

I put it on the backburner for about seven months and I've just emailed him asking for the raise. I'm pretty certain he'll ask me how much do I want and I have absolutely no idea because I've never asked for one before.

Generally, what would be an acceptable increase from €9.90?

Ask for 10%, hope for 5%.

Ask for €0.10 to make it a nice even €10.00/hour

If he's going to ask you how much you want, then surely the only question is how much do you reckon you can spend?

Could you not talk to them directly and make it more personal? It's very easy to say no by email. I think aim for 15% and negioate to 10 if needs be.

It's an English company. I work from Ireland and technically earn £7-an-hour. Email is the only option.

Look for £8 an hour then it doesn't as much of a jump when you put it in sterling!

in my opinion in the less populated areas €12/hr is a living wage
in Dublin and the other urban areas its more like €15/hr

    €99.00

Then he counters by moving it the other way to €0.99 . Then they meet in the middle and agree. :D

In my mind I'm hoping for at least £9.50 but, as I said, I don't know how realistic or unrealistic this is because I've never asked for a salary rise before.

That only works out at an extra £3900-per-year for his business. Again, I say 'only' but maybe that's a lot. Dunno.

Just ask him to raise it to whatever he was going to pay you in February.

That's an 35.7% pay increase, which is a pretty big jump for doing the same job.

What do you do op? That will go a long way to determine what the average wage is for what you do

Ask for a 20% increase. He'll laugh and say 5% is as high as he can go. Reject it again, tell him you've worked your ass of trying to be the best damn employee at his firm. You deserve the extra money. Surprised at your rejection, he offers you 10% thinking you accept without hesitation. But no, "Why must you insult me?" you say in a deep assertive tone. "There's only two ways I'm leaving here today. With the extra 20% I deserve, or without a job at all."

Your boss looks annoyed, surely you're going to be fired? Nope, your boss is so impressed with your boldness and self assured nature that he gives you the 20% just liked you asked. As he goes to shake your hand you knee him in the groin full force. He falls to the ground in agony as you continue to kick him with all your might. You crouch down slowly, grab his neck tight with your hands and squeeze. The light from his eyes slowly fades away and your boss lets out their final breath. You let go, and the lifeless corpse falls to the floor with a gentle thud.

You leave hastily, puzzled at how the preceding events could have escalated to such a degree.

He might balk at a 36% increase OP. I honestly dont know.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Measure your penis in inches and ask for that number as a percentage increase

If the OP is a woman should she offer to take a pay cut in the corresponding amount in depth?................:)

Maybe your employer thinks €9.90 is enough since your only on 130 hours a month. Ask for more hours, more hours more money?

If the OP is a woman ask for any amount and cry until you get a reasonable increase?

The official UK living wage is £7.85 an hour outside London. Why not treat that as your baseline?

This post is in jest but the bit in bold isn't far from what I would do. You need to grow balls and know your value. A little raise is pittance to your company. Training up replacement is not so appealing. I've learned this the hard way - letting other companies tell me what they think I should be paid. Not anymore they don't.
