    Hi all,
I have a bicycle that has a tiny hair crack in its frame. My local bike store advised that the bicycle is essentially a write-off. What can I do to dispose of this bike, or is there any way anyone might want the wheels etc? I’m on the verge of chopping it with an angle grinder to dispose of in my local civic amenity site. Bike cost around €1800, was a giant defy 2

Wheels and group set should be saleable, or you could simply get a new frame. You should also check the warranty, as they often are very long and you may be able to get it repaired for free.

You could probably sell the parts yourself and make a few bob from it through boards/adverts or maybe get a bit of welding done and it could be fine for use?

If any of that sounds like too much effort and you'd prefer to just get rid of it, pop me a PM :)

How old is the bike? Most of the parts are probably worth saving or moving onto a new frame, no?

Or keeping as spares if the OP gets (or already has) a replacement bike with a similar spec

Anything surplus to their own requirements could be offloaded via our own sub-forum, advets.ie or the likes of donedeal

Sure stick some duct tape on it, be grand.

I had a crack on one as a kid, it was welded up and a gusset welded on too.

Don't be so fast to write it off. Bike shops make their money from selling bikes. Just because it might be beyond their ability to fix it doesn't mean it is a write off yet. Check with some other bike shops about a repair job and ask for quotes. I know lad who were told their carbon bike was a write off due to a crack and still got it repaired. You'll lose nothing but a few hours checking it out with other shops and you might save yourself a couple of grand on a replacement.

The frameset is cracked according to my bike store from when my rear derailleur went into my spokes as I was out riding one evening. Its a Giant Defy composite 2 and I don't have the money to buy a replacement frame, so my options are to essentially cut up the bike and dump it, or perhaps maybe sell some pieces of it to anyone interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,359 ✭✭✭jon1981

if you post up the year of the bike, groupset name and details about the wheels...etc. People can probably best advise.

strip the bike of its components- store them- save a small few bob and buy a new frame that accepts your parts in a while!!
its only one piece of the puzzle thats broken...

also- it may well be fixable
look on facebook for carbontec in palmerstown

Groupset I assume would be Shimano 105s for that money?

    yes

Everything except the frame is worth money so certainly don't dump them, strip them off and keep it sell them. You could buy a cheap aluminium framed bike with low spec components and fit your own parts to it and have a relatively decent bike for small money

What caused the rear mech to go into the spokes - was it your fault or was it a problem with the bike itself?

It's a very fresh bike to simply crack and I'd say it's worth getting your bike shop to talk to Giant or else contact them yourself if the problem was down to the bike.

If the mech fouled the spokes due to a fault on your behalf then that's probably a different story.

Bring it to carbontech, get it fixed, keep cycling.

Otherwise, I'll take it off your hands and "dispose of it" for you!

Is it possible to repair a crack in a carbon fiber frame? Some people I talk to say yes, others no!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,359 ✭✭✭jon1981

Honestly, were you going to scrap the whole bike because of the frame issue? Just curious if that was the intention.

Yes it is. But the average bike shop can't do it. Lots of boat builders are now doing a nice little sideline in repairing carbon bikes.

Looking on salden.nl they have 2013 wilier alu frames for €199 if you are a size match. You could use parts from your bike. Be a cheapish project to tide you over.

I thought this sounded familiar, and sure enough the OP was on before asking about the likelihood of warranty cover for what I would guess was the same bike. General consensus (and my opinion also) at the time was that there was very little likelihood under the circumstances, so I can only assume this avenue has been exhausted already, and come up dry. There was no conclusive proof of it being the OP's fault, but equally nothing to suggest the shop could have either caused or prevented it, so they shouldn't really be expected to take responsibility for it, based on the previous thread at least.

Took the bike apart last night after work, and cut my frame apart with an angle grinder. Will take the entire bike to the recycling yard Saturday- €1500 down the drain.

The whole bike? or just the frame (not inclu Fork, handlebars...etc.) ?

The entire bike??? What recycling yard are you going to and at what time. I think I'll be "dropping stuff off" 5 min after you.

I think a red mist has descended.

Hope you kept the bars, forks, components and only dumped the frame & back wheel. You can sell or rebuild with the parts.

Giant Store guys are so sound they probably would have helped you out, blagged a frame from somewhere for you if you'd brought it in and showed them, probably even built it up aswell, don't think they'd have the same attitude to a chopped up bike though.

This thread is clearly a joke or something....

Either that or the poster can't read the many many suggestions he/she was offered.

I'm hoping the OP is having a giraffe! Surely you wouldn't bin 1 yr old 105s!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

OP did you set the bin on fire after? That would have brought this whole epsiode to a beautiful conclusion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 501 ✭✭✭rtmie

    Wow:

105 shifters, crankset, front mech, cassette (let's assume rear mech was foobarred) - 1 year old and lighlty used - lets say €200

Giant saddle, seat post, stem, bars - let's say €100

Giant pr2 wheel set (let's allow for rear needing TLC from derailleur crash) - lets say €100

Not researched the numbers, but may not be unreasonable to suggest OP has chucked approx €400 in a skip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭johnk123

Someone who would do such a thing, should not be allowed own an angle grinder....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

Sounds like a windup, sure why go stripping the bike down, angle grinding it and having to go to a recycling place. Could have just left it outside and it'd be nicked in no time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭whacker00

Well that escalated quickly, I thought there was some really good advice to help the OP out

I think this has also been advertised on DD, maybe there is some parts that haven't received the angle grinder treatment

    An angel wept!

Plenty of people would have paid good money for it let alone taken it off your hands for free and saved you even the hassle of cutting it up. Plenty of good components and parts. Please tell us you kept all the components, bars and forks.

I got a Carbon framed giant tarmac repaired last year no problems and the chain stay was more or less broken in half, a guy that fixes surf boards and carbon products of all sorts did it and you'd never know it was badly damaged!

To chop up a year old carbon frame with repairable damage is idiotic at best, even repaired it would have made a nice few €.

That was daft to be honest. You could have had the frame repaired or even just given it away to someone else who would have paid a small amount of money for a repair and had a grand frame for themselves.
