Eircom eFiber in Rural Areas

My trusty old dongle and o2 3G plan is starting to look a bit unecconomical these days with the amount of data most connected devices use. I've started to look into alternatives and was looking towards something like Lightnet. I see however that Eircom are planning on upgrading the local exchange about 4-5Km away to eFiber next year.

Currently I can't get NextGen broadband because from what I understand, the line is pretty old. It's been in place since the 80's anyway and wasn't really upgraded. Those futher down the road with a new line installed in the last 10-15 years are getting in or around 2.5Mb NG.

Is eFibre going to be of any use to me? If I got even 5-10 megs out of it it'd be grand. Is eFibre still town centric or is anyone getting use out of it a few Kms outside their local town and exchange?

You wont be covered. At 5KM you can expect a solid 3-4Mb on NGN.

Google the NBP, that will be your saving grace.

As ED E says your chances look grim, but you can go here

    http://www.irelandoffline.org/map/#/home

Check the (Phone Line) ‘VDSL Cabinets (eFibre)’ option
Click on your location on the map.
Mouse over the cabinet(s) nearest you, if any. It will give an indication of respective live date and describe a 1km radius from the cabinet location. It’s not definitive.

The National Broadband Plan (NBP) map is here.
    http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/communications/en-ie/Broadband/Pages/National-Broadband-Plan-Map-.aspx

Estimates for the roll-out of the NBP vary between 3 and 6 years; starting late in in 2016.

Have a hunt around for your local cabinet. I believed at first that I was too rural for eFibre (4 km to local exchange) but then I found my local cabinet hidden against a wall 500m away, which was eventually upgraded to a VDSL cabinet.
