We're looking to change our car for a bigger version. Only problem is cars we've found are a few years old and have lower value to the car we'll be trading in. House does this work in car dealerships? I'm assuming they won't just hand us back €5000 or so

Doesn't work like thaT. Unless your car is one of a kind unique. But then you'd have people lining up to get it.

Best thing to do. Sell it private and take the car you want then.

Dealer in most cases will rob you if doing that.
At best you will get trade price for your car and have to pay retail for the forecourt car. That's if your car is something they would be looking to take into stock.
Its not really a realistic option as you would certainly be better off selling your car very cheap on donedeal And buying straight.
