Ford Focus 2001 strange revving issue on 3rd gear ...

    Hi Folks,

Got a ford focus 1.4 2001. I have been lurking around here researching this car and you guys were right. It is under-powered but a very comfortable drive. I may actually upgrade to a 1.6 soon.

Anyway, I have noticed something strange while accelerating in 3rd gear.

I would step on the gas and the rpm would quickly pop up to almost 4 then settle on 2, then climb normally up the dial.

I guess the best way to describe it is a surge in rpm. My foot is not moving while this is happening, it's just pressed on the pedal. I'm not flooring it either. But I guess it does happen when I'm depressing it more than usual, for example driving up a hill. (I'm in Cork city, it's very hilly)

Any idea what could be causing this?

    Thanks

Really? Simple as that? Are you guys sure?

I was trying to google this issue but didn't know how to word it. Found no info at all!

If you could be arsed, would you mind explaining how you know this? I prefer to know what I'm talking about when I go to a garage. Thanks.

Also, how long do you think she has left?

A bad clutch can be identified by putting the foot down heavily. The revs will go up but the car will not gain any speed. The revs will drop and then the car starts to accelerate.

When you say it happens more on a hill that makes sense because it's much harder to pull a car up a steep hill and it's easier for the engine to just slip the clutch because it's worn.

In order to maximise what's left of the clutch, you want to avoid those situations where you see the revs go up significantly because when that happens you are burning the clutch even more so just ease off the accelerator and press it really lightly. You want to get it replaced though ASAP.

    Hi folks just another question.

I'm reading online that you should do the concentric slave cylinder as well as the clutch.

Is this really necessary? Will it add more labour costs to the job?

What will happen if I just replace the clutch and not the CSC?
