Taxidermy Question

    Hello,

I recently took a walk down Francis Street in Dublin and noticed some nice taxidermy pieces that I am interested in purchasing. I don't really know much about the area and want to ensure I make a good investment and not pay too much and ensure I get good quality animals etc.

Does anyone have any recommendation for a book or website to read up on the subject? I can't find anything particularly relevant on amazon.

    Thanks,

    K

You're on a tricky subject here and this post http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=80542543&postcount=2 may be useful.

Once very popular amongst Victorian & Edwardians (and still it seems with some American dentists) the hobby of shooting/stuffing/collecting wildlife is no longer p.c as well as being a tricky legal area. Good examples of the taxidermist's craft turn up at auction from time to time but most are very moth eaten. There are some expensive online dealers but be careful - better off with a moth eaten relic with a provenance that shows it died many years ago than ending up in court. :D

Better still have a visit here http://www.museum.ie/en/intro/natural-history.aspx every time you feel the urge and get a fix to keep you going.
