Wisdom Teeth Issues

    Hi,

    TL;DR Version:

    1) Top two wisdom teeth fully up, lower two coming up, loads of infections in lower two over the past few months, immune system feeling generally down, wondering if this is connected?
    2) How bad is it to take out wisdom teeth and can all 4 be taken at once or two and two?
    3) Can the lower two be taken out by my normal dentist or will she more than likely send me for a referral to a surgeon?
    4) Finally, what cost am I looking at taking out all 4?

    Story:

Over the last few months I have been having seriously bad issues with my lower wisdom teeth.

The top ones are fully up. The bottom ones are only coming in now, not sure how far but you can see the tooth breaking through either side.

I must have had 3 or 4 infections in the bottoms ones since Christmas.

I've been to the dentist twice since and she provided antibiotics. Which I don't like as I usually end up getting the side effects.

Anyway I've a fierce infection in the lower left wisdom tooth, the gum is swollen and sore to open my jaw and eat. It is easing and seems to be slowly getting better. Now I seem to have a sinus infection and have flu like symptoms.

Could this happen? Could your wisdom teeth coming up lower your immune system?

On another note I have an appointment Tuesday the 18th (my normal dental surgery is closed next week for holidays) so I am hoping to get something out then! Can they give me something to relax me during the procedure as I get very nervous?

The last time I was there my dentist had a theory that the top two wisdom teeth were coming down and hitting the lower ones and the gum line and cheek and she said the infections might stop if she took the top two out and then we can deal with the lower two if they keep getting infected. She wanted to take the top two there and then without an x-ray  surely she should have taken an x-ray?

Finally for the bottom two to be removed is there a need to go to a surgeon or can a normal dentist not do it?

To be honest I would prefer to just get them all out on my next appointment - they have been doing nothing but causing pain and sickness over the last few months - at least I think it's down them anyway...

    Thanks for reading.

    Hi op,
The problem sounds like its the lower wisdom teeth and usually they cause problems because they are stuck/ impacted....

Yes they can all be removed together...

Can it make you feel rundown? Yes
On the flip side, a run down patient can get more wisdom tooth infections because they are rundown to begin with. Do you have other symptoms, be sure that you are otherwise ok...

Removing the upper wisdom teeth and allowing the lowers to come through is a common plan that usually just delays the inevitable removal of the lower teeth, imo.
It is usually the lowers that are stuck, get plaque around them, get infected, the gum gets sore and swollen, then the uppers happen to bite on this infected and swollen gum....
Removing the upper wisdom teeth just removes the teeth biting on the sore swollen and infected gum. The gum will still be sore swollen and infected, just not as much...

Will the lowers then erupt more? Depends on their angle and your age, usually not...

Taking out a tooth without an xray these days is a big no no imo so that would be a black mark in my book... Especially for a lower wisdom tooth...

Some dentists do and are good at removing wisdom teeth, some are not, you are not to know...
All oral surgeons are good and experienced at removing wisdom teeth...

Impacted wisdom tooth removal is covered by medical insurance if you have it. There are some additional fees but nothing major...
If not, a few hundred if under local anaesthetic.
Under a grand if all 4 under Iv sedation
About 2 grand if all 4 under General anaesthetic...

    Good luck
    OS

Thanks for the replies guys - it seems to be clearing up but I will probably get another bout of it again in a few months.

Appointment made with my dentist and I will tell her all about my worries.
