I googled this but couldn't find anything, but I'm interested to know what happens when a photo or video from an average joe goes viral.

Do you get throngs of people trying to contact you in the space of a couple of hours? Do hundreds of notifications turn up on your Facebook page or Twitter feed? Do you get contacted by loads of companies trying to give you their stuff because you're famous for a day?

Obviously there are videos that have lasted longer than others, like Charlie bit my Finger that's lasted years to a little girl standing on a coffee table having the craic with her da (yeah you probably don't remember that one).

It amazes me that after someone posts a pic of their cat that looks grumpy, ITS THEN MADE INTO A MOVIE!

the closest Iv come is commenting on a ricky Gervais Facebook comment that got a couple of hundred likes and some comments - more than average notifications for a few hours, then everyone moves on. My bro in law and fellow boardsie was retweeted by Zach braff (scrubs TV show fame) to a million and a half followers. He was getting notifications 6 months later which I thought was funny.

So, would love to know if anyone has a story to tell about this or know someone who's phone pretty much blew up due to all the retweets

Any chance you could rewrite that in 140 characters or less?

Had one video I recorded on my crap mobile go viral once (Bono busking). ABC, CNN, SKY and almost every other channel had played it within hours of my uploading it. Only one of them contacted me on YouTube to ask me if they could use it and I think even they used it before I replied. It was around 6 years ago now. Shag all happened tbh and it was short lived as better quality videos of it were uploaded a few hours later on other channels and so my 15 mins were up very fast. That's the closet I'll ever come to knowing how Falco felt I guess.

Closest I've come was recording the TV when yer man with the glasses in the audience at the Late Late Show looked at the camera. Put it on youtube, posted a link on boards and was warned to take it down within 12 hours of uploading.
