If you had a budget of €8K and had a choice between these three diesel cars, which would you go for?
Are there reliability issues with the Passats in this price range compared to the skodas?
If you're not a fan of these what diesel car would you go for instead? (2008 or newer).

had a passat for 6 months never again. Nothing but problems with it. Not saying there all the same but it put me off, and I have been driving VW since '00. Still have a caddy van with just under 300k and a part from 2 dmf it is trouble free.
Have to say I like the comfort and size of the Superb not to sure if I like the look of them.
I changed the Passat for a Avensis 10 model and have to say u love it. A way better car to drive than the passat and will hold some value I hope.

The Octavia is from the class below the Passat/Superb so a direct comparison is not really possible. Looking for a decent example of any of these in diesel from 2008 onwards with respectable mileage, on a budget of only €8k is going to be tough. I'd forget about the cheap tax of a 2008 model or be prepared to increase the budget to get a good one.

ive a buddy who would say skoda skoda skoda
    things to be wary of
early 2008 2.0tdi would be the engine with the oil pump trouble, (open to correction on that)
1.9 tdi BXE engine has a habit of throwing conrod through engine block for no reason.
Passats will give electric handbrake trouble, skoda doesnt have electric handbrake .
8k is a tight budget to get a 2008 diesel

With a budget of €8k you will be looking at a Mk1 Superb which is based on the B5 Passat launched back in 1996. Not necessarily a bad thing but they look a bit dated these days.

Out of those I'd pick the Superb.
We've had both a Superb and a Passat in the family, I've driven both and would prefer the Superb.
It's a much larger feeling car inside, and, provided they are spec'd to the same level, you don't miss out on anything essential but the car should be cheaper to buy thanks to the skoda badge vs the vw premium!

Maybe €8K is a bit optimistic for a cheap tax car, I've great faith in Donedeal tho.
Got an 05 Octavia with 60k miles in Jan '12 for €6,500. It has 120k miles now, going like a clock. Gave no trouble apart from clutch/flywheel last year.
I suppose seven year old cars aren't as plentiful now.

Cheap tax cars retain their resale value because everyone wants then.

Still plenty under op budget though:

I'm sure you can but if looking at the cheapest examples then they are usually the cheapest for a good reason. Buying a second hand can be mine field but you can get lucky.

I got an 08 Octavia last year thanks to a boards.ie member giving me a link. The only problem I had with it was cam seal at its last service which resulted in getting a new timing belt and pump due to oil splash but it wasn't a deal breaker.
    No other issues with it.
