Celeron N2840 would be on the same performance level as the AMD on this, yeah?

They both perform pretty well for basic tasks - web browsing, documents, Skype etc.

The Celeron N2840 would be faster than this, it's pretty much bottom of the rung stuff. Not to say that it's not fine for facebook, the odd movie, browsing the web, but considering it's refurbished, €190 is about all it's worth at best. You can get faster laptops brand new for €230-240.

those toshibas must be all the ones returned to Argos and Amazon because they were unusable. model c50d-b-120. lots of speed issues doing the most basic of tasks, even doing a restore can take upwards of 6 hours instead of the more usual 30-40 minutes.

    I wouldn't take them for £50.

It doesn't say it but there is No dvd drive in these and most dont even have the connection on the board so you can't add a drive later.

Argos must be delighted though - selling like hot cakes! :D :P

Because it's cheap. And too many people think cheap = bargain alert.

I bought the Irish equivalent of the Toshiba last year and it is now relegated in favour of my five year old Lenovo. Everything is a big deal to it, from start up to opening a browser to searching for a document. Even the update to Windows 10 failed to make much of an impression. I'd avoid.

No. Honestly I wouldn't think it a good choice for one reason in particular.

    It has a TN display.

That will wreck your head especially when watching videos. Unless you can manage to always keep your eyes in a position that's almost 90 degrees to the screen, the picture, particularly in dark scenes will start to change into this weird "shadowy" grey that is hard to see.

See this video showing two Lenovos side by side - one a TN panel, the other an IPS panel. Observe what happens to the one on the left as he tilts them both, and how the one on the right retains the normal colors but the one on the left becomes nearly impossible to see. This also happens as you move to the left or right of centre, so it's not just the tilt. Tilt angle plus move to the side makes it even worse.
And also bear in mind this demo in the video is being done with a bright image on the display.

Here's another showing what happens to a solid pink background when viewed from various angles on a TN. Watch the pink develop a gradient and even look like blue instead of pink as the viewing angle changes.

The Toshiba you linked earlier from Argos has the same type of screen and thus same problem. The HP I am unsure, but I would expect it to have something better than a TN given the higher price.

Don't most standard laptops have TN panels?

Even €500 ones? Viewing angles aren't great on a lot of them.

I might just splash out and get a Spectre X360 or XPS13.
