Do WBU titles hold any merit?

I only ask as I see one of our local boxers is fighting for the WBU Light Middleweight World Title.

Michael Kelly (Former World Military Games Champion) is his name and I've kind of followed his career a bit until he was comprehensively beaten by Frankie Gavin a couple of years ago. Given he's in his 40's I thought he was more or less done. Then I seen this poster a few days ago and was a bit taken aback when I seen Kelly was fighting for the WBU Light Middleweight World Title. Given that even at his best he was probably third or fourth rate when compared to the elite boxers I'm guessing this belt doesn't mean a whole lot?

Nah, it wouldn't be one of the ones held in any sort of high esteem and is more a vehicle for lower tier fighters and fellas still fighting way past their prime.

Kelly has lost his last 6 fights and never fought at light middleweight.
Neither of the two men have fought in the last 2 years and it's a vacant title, (never having been held by anyone according to boxrec). Plus there are apparently two different organisations calling themselves WBU.

That should tell you all you need to know about the validity of this title!

Interestingly enough though, I do believe the bookies pay out if someone backs a guy to win a world title, and they win wbo or wbu - I do believe a number of people backed Bernard Dunne to win a a world title and got paid out before the wba title - I believe he might have won wbo or wbu previous to the Cordoba fight

WBO is a legit world title along with WBA, IBF and WBC. WBU and Wbf are titles which are world titles but they aren't "real" in a sense as the best boxers in the world don't fight for them. Dunne never won one of those "fake" world titles, he won the legit WBA belt as well as an EBU belt which is a pretty decent belt to have too, especially as a newcomer.

Speaking of these other world titles, the IBO have had some decent champions...Wlad, Hopkins, Golovkin, Lara, Floyd, Hatton, Manny. They've all had that belt in their division at one point.
