Used Car for Foreigner

    Dear members,

I'll be visiting Ireland for 3 months to do some climbing and hiking. Rental cars are too expansive and my plan is to buy a cheap used car and resell it in the end. Or if it was super cheap to just donate it to someone who wants it.

My concerns are insurance-related. From what I've heard, I would need a permanent place of resistance in Ireland in order to register my car. Is there any way around it? I would also really appreciate any information on the whole process from buying the car to being able to hit the road. Or any alternative suggestions for cheap ways to get hold of a car for 3 months.

    Thanks so much in advance!!

    Hi Stefan,

I'm guessing you might not have friends in the country you could use as a base for insurance purposes and suchlike?

Another alternative would be to buy a cheap car in your home country and drive it over, provided you're not travelling from the other side of the globe! You can drive a car with foreign registration and insurance for up to six months here in Ireland before you legally need to register it here.

Would it perhaps be easier to buy and insure it in Northern Ireland..? Probably not, but it's a thought.

AFAIR it's up to 12 months, provided owner is not resident in Ireland.
