I was reading about some security problem that JEEP had, and I noticed the company name was Fiat Chrysler Jeep, I must have missed this company buyout when it happened.

I got to look at some of the largest automobile firms in the world and the the position of each Marque (and which car makes are within with group).

these screen graps from Wiki best describe these.

I thought this thread might have generated more conversation.

My knowledge of automobile umbrella groups is clearly lacking...!

Renault own AB Volvo (truck, bus and construction brands) not Volvo cars. The Chinese have that.

Edit: According to Wikipedia Renault sold off the last of their shares in AB Volvo in Dec 2012.

Ford seems to have been the problem all along, Jaguar / Land Rover, Mazda and Volvo all seem to be producing more interesting cars now than under Ford.

The ranking is outdated. At the moment it is:

    1. VW
    2. Toyota
    3. GM

GM had been top of the list for 70 years, but were overtaken by Toyota a few years ago, who were themselves overtaken by VW this year.

The Chinese have been the best thing to happen Volvo in a long time. Loads of cash for development and fairly light touch ownership.

The Indians have done the same for JLR.

Ford ownership was seriously hampering both companies. Luckily they're still going strong unlike SAAB which GM pretty much killed.

Think if the Renault Nissan alliance is taken as one, it's about no 4 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

On the list, if completed, Renault was 11, BMW was 12 and Daimler was 14...

Toyota own a bit of them. Maybe you're thinking of Isuzu?

Could you argue or is it off topic, that the size of dealer group in Ireland, take for instance the ones that sell the VAG cars, joe duffys,Bolands,Blackwater,Connolly's that between them they have a lot of the dealerships and the days are numbered for the one dealership is owned by the one person...
