    Hi Guys,

Am hoping someone can help me, I am terrible at working out quantities for multiples. Basically, we have a party in the house this weekend and we have this huge 6 litre jug with a tap on it. We want to make mojitos but am not sure of how much of everything to put in. I have a litre bottle of rum, 4 litres of soda water, 16 limes and loads of mint and caster sugar. Can anyone help with approximate amounts of what I should put in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Ash

A good ratio is 2 parts rum, 1 part lime juice, 1 part simple syrup. Make the sugar syrup up by mixing caster sugar and hot water in equal amounts. Mint is harder to guage, just throw a good few handfuls in. I'd leave the soda water out until after the drink is poured from the jar. Otherwise it'll go flat pretty quick.

Well its six litres jug so you have 5 litres of liquid.

Id make out the glasses with two spoons of sugar in each one and a wedge of lime and some mint.

Then id pour all the soda water and rum into the jug. Mix it up and squeeze in the juice of about 4 limes. Crush some mint to release the mint oil and leave that in there too.

Then people can add the liquid to the premade up glass when they need it. Id recommend putting about three bags of ice through a blender to crush it too.

If your using pint glasses you'll get 12-15 glasses out of it. Depending on ice levels. Smaller glasses that take a can of coke would yield you about 24-28

Well assuming 250ml of liquid per person and a shot per person, IMHO you would need 50mls of rum and 200 of soda per person. So 6l aprox 20 drinks. A litre of rum should be fine and about 4l of soda. The rest ice.

You just want the base mix in the jug or the entire mojito?

If the entire mojito you will need to mush in about 40g of mint and 20 teaspoons of brown sugar also. I like lime so I woudl use 1/2 lime per drink..so 10 limes also, chopped in quarters and muddled with the mint!

I think I would keep base mix and crush mint, lime and sugar and ice as needed per drink served..then just top up with your base mix?

    What Irish Goat said.

    Couple of points :
Mojitos are made with lime(or lemon) juice, not muddled limes.
Mojitos use ice cubes, not crushed ice.

I'd use a good unrefined cane sugar to make the syrup. Tesco do a reasonably priced one.

I'd let people add their own soda to taste.

I'd keep the mix in the jug quite tart and let people add more syrup to taste.

Most Mojitos I taste are too sweet and too dilute for my liking.

Second or third thread in a while on large batch party mojitos....

Technically speaking you're looking to make a punch not a mojito for the mojito is a drink made individually in each glass.

I would echo the previous points about leaving the soda water out of the mix. Soda water is only added as a small dash to give a touch of effervescence. Don't add crushed ice to your punch/jug as it will dilute faster than larger pieces of ice.

Keep as many sprigs of mint for garnish on hand as you intend to serve drinks because a mojito without a mint garnish is a bit rubbish - the mint aroma at the top of the glass as you take a sip is essential imo.

Sugar won't fully dissolve in a cold liquid so I'd strongly recommend making syrup ( 1part water to 1part sugar, heated in a pan and left to cool; "rich" syrup is 2part sugar to 1part water).

If it was me, I would prefer something like 2parts rum to 1part lime juice with a half part sugar syrup. Like beer_revo said, too many cocktails are served sweet but people generally prefer a sweet drink to a tart one and I guess a party is probably not the time to attempt to educate people's palate. Taste it as you're mixing the lime juice, sugar and rum and adjust amounts accordingly to what you would prefer.

How much juice you get out of them limes depends on their size. Some limes you will get 1oz/30ml and some you'll get less than that.

    Hi Guys,

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your help and suggestions on this. The mojitos went down very very well. I ended up using a sugar syrup made from fine cane sugar (about 1 2/3 cups), juice of 12 limes, 2 packets of mint leaves, 1 litre of rum and 3 litres of soda water. I didn't add the soda until people wanted to start drinking it but it went down amazingly. The jar had an airtight lid on it, so it didn't loose much of its fizz. Wasn't too sweet and was really refreshing served with a couples of wedges of frozen lime and sprig of mint.

Thanks again for all your help :):)

Cool ash xxx, glad it worked for you. That sprig of mint garnish is important. Good idea to lightly smack it against your hand to get some aroma out of it.
