Survival Games on Steam

By now you must have heard how Steam has been seemingly inundated by a raft of survival games, most (if not all) on early access. games like Rust, Stranded Deep, The Forrest, Salt, The Long Dark, H1Z1, A.R.K. and (presumably) many more. I nearly got The Forrest during the recent sale but decided against as it's still early access. I'd been looking forward to The Stomping Land, though now it's just a cautionary tale.
Still, i'm interested in the emerging genera and would love to hear from anyone who's played some/any of these.

Why the sudden popularity? How do they compare, are they all just clones? What ones to pick up/avoid? What looks like it might actually be finished?

    thanks :)

I basically never buy Early Access and with these kind of survival games it's their longevity and community that will sell the game in the long-run if it's actually good. In short... wait it out. I've no rush to play them. A friend gifted me Ark. It's alright but I'd rather be playing almost anything but it most of the time... again I almost don't wanna touch it until it's done... hunger bars
