Mk4 golf rear fog lights

My mk4 2001 golf failed the DOE (it's a van) today because the rear fog lights aren't working! The thing is, I have the car 5 years and they have never worked, but this is the first year I've been failed for it!

I looked at them before, changed the bulbs and checked the fuse but couldn't get them working. The switch seems fine too because I get the indication on the dash when I switch them on, and it's the same switch for head lights which are fine!

I have to try and get it sorted now for the re-test! Has anyone any ideas what else I could try before I bring it to a mechanic/ auto electrician?

There is only 1 working fog light bulb on the rear of the Mk4 Golf, from memory I think it's the right side.

It should be the right side and the bottm right bulb. Also you should take in to account the bulb you are replacing it might be faulty, try another one to rule that out.

Ok tried that, put in a good bulb....still no joy!

Could be corrosion on the contacts to the bulb. Sometimes cleaning them up with some fine sandpaper will get them going. Pulling them out a small bit too so they put more pressure on the bulb.

i reckon the switch is kaput. it is an easy 5 second job to remove the switch and swop it for a known good one, borrowed off a friend/neighbour with the same car. the part of the switch that you turn for the lights is how you remove it. simply make sure it is at position 0 then push the switch in and turn it anti clockwise and the whole switch will come out of the dash and then you can pull the multi plug off the back of it and see if anything is burnt/corroded. hth

The doe or whatever it's called now is gone unbelievably strict.

    Worse than the nct.

I saw a jeep that failed on the passenger window not working.
