I picked one up this morning. 5" screen and seems pretty snappy (compated to my old one anyway). Comes with 2 Halfords cases (pretty crappy, but it's free right?) There is a 1 year sub to speed camera updates too.

    Which one is better ?

These are good prices. I paid that just for the lifetime maps, I'm sure.

I have a Garmin, which is very easy to use. I've used Tomtom in hire cars, and while it takes a bit of getting used to, my gut feeling is that it is actually better.

Personally I find tomtom way easier to use and the garmin a bit of getting used to. So I guess it is personal choice... But great value though :)

I am thinking of buying either the tomtom or garmin mentioned above but will need the USA maps.Would anyone have bought these recently?Im just trying to get an idea of cost and if one might be cheaper than the other for these maps.

So do either of them read out the road number, the A34 etc or do they solely use road names? Would prefer one that goes by the numbers since they are usually the ones on signposts?

You can get the USA map here for €24

I think you'll need a microSD card to store it. If you aren't going to use in Europe then you might be better off buying one in the states.

Went in to buy the bargain tomtom 79€, spent more money on garmin nuviCam, €300 with discount vouchers, impressive bit of kit, mainly because I can put a wireless rear mounted camera , but got lane departure etc, but also it has a forward recording 1080p camera, and I was reading lately that insurance companies are offering discount for dash cam's, anyone heard of Irish insurance company done similar?

That's what you call a good sales person :) If it has both cameras then it prob worth the premium.

No, but you might be able to get a discount on the dash cam if you're insured. Axa policyholders can get 10% off purchases in Halfords. T&C's mention that sat navs & radio's are excluded but no mention of dash cams. Nothing about sales items being excluded either, as far as I can see.

Looks like a more recent version than the TomTom Start 25

The Start line are their basic line. Go are more upmarket. That one is 4.3" as opposed to 5" which explains why it's the same price. You want to check if Satnavs are included in the discount. When I tried to use my Axa card I was told there are no discounts for Satnavs - not even staff discounts.

Guys - if you are buying the tomtoms - you should remember that you get a further discount on some of the GO ones

    http://www.tomtom-promotions.com/cashback/GOCashback/en-IE/Terms?g=2f83b9d9-0cf1-457b-94b4-87f2ce0dc498

So if you take the tomtom GO 4.3 inch and add something for a euro to push it over the 100 to get the 10 euro Halfords discount - then you can also get 10 euro back afterwards as well from TomTom.

My case I have reserved and set of satnav wipes (?) for 1.49 and the GO 4.3

Total to pay in store: €91.48

And presumably I get a 10 euro rebate from TomTom bringing it to 81.48 ?

Probably the best value at the moment is actually the GO 5100 with Life Time Maps - comes in at 289 with the Halfords discount - and you get 50 back from TomTom as well making it 239 for one with Lifetime everything on every map and the built in sim.
Its costing at lease 350 everywhere else (including TomTom discount)

Definite great value and the Go 40 has lifetime map updates to boot.

Tom Tom? Got one at Christmas.....Woeful

Used it last week to head to a well known but hard to find visitor attraction. Tom Tom took me to a field 5km from the place.

Not the first issue I've had with it. Very fissly and not many options.

Switched back to my10 year old Garmin and I'll stay with it until I really need a new one - which will be a Garmin
