Saorview TV recommendation for a bedroom

    Hi all,

I've currently got a Humax 1000s Freesat box in my bedroom with an old non-saorview TV. I'd like to replace the TV.

Can anyone recommend a good 24 - 27" Saorview approved TV preferably with recording function via USB although this is not essential? I assume a 7 day EPG is out of the question or series link?

One other thing...is it even possible to buy a Saorview TV with an additional Freesat tuner in a TV of this size?

    All advice appreciated thanks :)

I have a 24 inch bush in one bedroom and a 28 samsung in another and both are fine. the samsung i got in currys for €249 in 2013 and the bush in argos in 2012 for €199.

the saorview tv will have a 7 day epg. I can't confirm whether my tvs have record etc as.

Finally you cannot get a freesat tv that size plus if you have a freesat tv and the country is set to Uk the irish channels are in the 800s and if you set the country to ireland you do not get the freesat epg.

    I hope this helps

Is it the HB-1000S single-tuner box you have? Is that why you're interested in getting another tuner in the TV itself?

Thanks for the feedback kooga, very useful.

To be fair having a freesat tuner is not essential as I have the Humax but it's good to know how the regional settings work thanks!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,278 ✭✭✭Thurston?

I'd be fairly sure the Samsung Freesat TVs would let you move the Saorview channels anywhere you want in the list, after tuning in. Panasonic I wouldn't know.

Anyhow, the smallest current-model Freesat TV is 40".

There are non-Freesat TVs with satellite tuners available of course, but a bit pointless if the Humax you have is a twin-tuner model. (Unless you have other plans for the Humax?)

@ Thurston, the Humax serves my purposes perfectly for Freesat. It has dual feeds from the dish so thats all I need.

What I am specifically looking for is a small bedroom tv that is Saorview compatible or can I assume 99% bought in Ireland are these days?

Yeah, you'd probably struggle to find a TV that can't decode Saorview broadcasts: maybe some cheapie models intended for the UK only, that happen to find their way here.

If nobody comes up with a specific recommendation, it might be best to look at what's for sale, & post up a few links or make/model info. of any that catch your eye, if you want someone to look over the specs.

its not freesat but a fta tuner. not the worst espcially if on the wall and no need then for a fta box

Unfortunately size is an issue as it is going onto a corner unit so 32" is out of the question :(

Will take a look in a few places and see whats available :D

I would check it out as newer 32" TVs are more compact than older (or cheaper) 28" ones. The 32" refers to the screen size not the cabinet size. A friend updated his 28" to a 32" and was surprised that the cabinet was actually slightly smaller.

Good point Sam, I'll definitely take that into consideration:D

    Hi all,

    OP HERE.

About to pull the trigger on this one finally :)

I'm looking for a 24" Saorview approved TV for a bedroom. I've narrowed it down to these TV's. Currently updating from a FULL HD 22" Samsung. I'm assuming I won't see a huge loss in picture quality going from this 1080p tv to a 720p tv (Viewing distance is 8 foot and TV will be plugged into a Freesat Humax 1000s box).

I'd appreciate any please :) Which one should I choose from these?

    Samsung 24E390EX/XU (Currys.ie - €219) - HD READY

    Samsung UE24H4003 (Argos.ie - €199) - HD READY - No idea if this has a saorview tuner?

    Samsung LT24E310EX (Currys - €180) - HD READY

    Panasonic 24" TX-24C300B (DID - €235) - HD READY

Samsung 24” LT24D390S (Currys - €299) - FULL HD - may not be worth the price!

Cheers Kooga, good find, but I'm looking for a 24" TV with a Saorview tuner. The one you mention has a 'freeview digital tuner' - I don't think thats the same as a Saorview tuner, although I am open to correction :) Also it looks like its out of stock all over Ireland :(

I got one of these for the bedroom.

LG 29MT31S. 29" but they are small!

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-29-Inch-Widescreen-Ready-Freeview/dp/B00PWAGG92

199STG (280 Euro) Fullfilled by amazon, so free shipping.

Saorview, Satellite Tuner, Smart TV, DLNA, Wifi Built in).

LG should be enabling freesat software in these anytime soon....

(you can also use chansort to edit the Satellite channels etc).

Nice TV STB, would be nice to see it in the flesh. 27" is the Max I could go but 24" is ideal for the location.

Actually they dont do a 24 inch in this TV.

Its very thin. Hang on I'll measure it.

f*ckers. Its actually 26 inches wide by 16 inches long. Its labelled a 29MTS31!

Screen size is measured across the diagonal. This goes back to when CRTs were round (in the 1930s).

Measure the cabinet, not the screen - newer sets have thinner surrounds.

There is a 24 inch version. Its called LG 24MT30S BUT let me double check the spec......

You will probably get away with the 29 version I originally linked to. I knew there was something wrong with that size wise and now that I measured it width and height, which included the bezel.

Oh yeah meant to mention does netflix also.

EDITED. Thanks Sam. Its 30 inches on the diagonal. I was measuring the width which is 26". In this day and age of non CRTs everyone is mounting these LED/LCD Tv's, its more width that I would have been concerned about!

The width and height of the cabinet is the important bit.

Historic measures persist long after they have relevance.

Tyres are a good example. Tread width is measured in mm to fit wheels also quoted in inches. Diameter is measured to fit wheel in inches - that is the inner diameter. The outer diameyer (the important dimension) is calculated from the wheel diameter plus twice (the tread width times the profile). So we have tyre size 195/70 16 - a mixture of mm/% inches.

Another bizarre one if air conditioning capacity - it is measured in tons. Tons of what? - Ice.

A bit off topic but worth thinking about.

    It will work with Saorview

Measuring the screen diagonal makes it sound like your getting something bigger. A bit like the 9.99 bargain that you'd never spend a tenner on :)

I'm just wondering how can you be sure, as it would be a good choice if it did? Are all TV's with 'freeview digital tuners' capable of receiving Saorview channels? It is critical that the TV I choose does support Saorview! I'm just a little concerned that there is not mention of it being compatible on argos.ie.

Check it on the Saorview.ie site.

Freeview HD TVs will receive Saorview but put all the channels (plus the blank ones and the test cards) in the 800s in random order. You must get a Saorview approved TV or you will have no end of trouble. You will get the pictures though.

FreeviewHD TVs with an Ireland country option will put the Saorview channels in the correct order, this will apply to all the big brand manufacturers. In the past some TVs were UK specific and did cause problems as was the case with Sam's TV. I've got an early 2008 Sony Freeview TV that's been working happily with Saorview since the engineering test transmissions started locally in early 2009.

I had no problems with the TV until last year when 2RN/Saorview messed with the signal - killing Series Link, and adding a load of blank channels and a few test channels plus two badly placed SSU channels that parked themselves a location 1 in the EPG and could not then be shifted.

Most TVs now sold in this neck of the woods are Saorview compatible, and if they are not then take them back.

    Best to be pre-warned.

Most of the TVs in our and other family members homes are pre-Saorview approval and all except one are working without issue, a c.2010 Philips TV, which has similar issues.

    OP here...

I've narrowed it down to these 2 TV's...

PANASONIC VIERA TX24C300B (DID - €235) - Freeview HD tuner - HD READY

Samsung UE24H4003 (Powercity - €219) - HD READY and non-tilt stand :( - Saorview Approved but appears to be a NON-HD tuner, does this mean I wouldn't be able to received the HD channels like RTE1HD but just the SD channels?

If it's Saorview approved, it will get all the Saorview services. There is no separate HD spec, unlike Freeview.
