I know insurance in Ireland is a crazy business and anything much more than a 1.4 litre Focus that is under 10 years old is nearly a no no, but I am just wondering on the off chance are there any reasonable minded insurers who will insure a 24 year old on an old 2.9 litre Volvo barge?

It is not the type of car that a hooligan would be hooning about in, but as we all know the companies never take such likelihood into account. I like big old cars, do small mileage and I just happened to come across this and I quite fancy it for novelty value: http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/volvo /s80/used-1999-volvo-s80-s80-2-9-luxur-clare-fpa-201526234644964

Deep down I know myself there is probably no chance of getting a reasonable quote, but I was just wondering if the likes of more niche insurance companies such as Britton would be worth a try? Apparently they can give reasonable quotes to less attractive business for companies on the back of a large excess should the worst happen.

I have nearly 7 years driving experience and a number of years no claims named experience, as well as experience on my own policy.

Worth a try ringing around or maybe through a broker. I was able to insure my 3 Litre landcruiser at 24 for about €700 so it is possible.

When you hit 25 you should be in with a very good chance.

Is that car really for sale for €300?

I'd say it would be possible but would have to fork out a nice chunk.

that engine is actually quite powerful so they will use it against you.

only thing is i dont think id buy that car as the NCT (why dont they pass it themselves before selling ?) and tax is out which is over 2K on this i think ? but it does have some nice specs but also its in a hape which is why i think there might be some underlining issues unseen to the naked eye.

just because it was the lord mayors car doesn't mean feck all. he gets a new one every year so its all the next owners to how they look after it etc.

Only one way to find out...

I'd say you might get something relatively reasonable, it's not the kind of car that would be rallied around the place. That is some value for money if it's in good condition!

    Try Liberty, I'm 21 and I have insured a 5.4 V12 with them

Thing is though, I actually remember that exact car when it was new.

The Lord Mayor at the time was local to me and as a child that was car mad, I was in awe of this 'new shape Volvo' with its unique reg.

Few people today will relate to what appeal I see in it, I am well aware of that. I would sort of be hesitant in describing it myself.

I had a 530d insured at 21 with Liberty with 2 years no claims so I doubt you'll have any issues!

I've a public spreadsheet with some quotes from a few people on different cars here. I see that a 24 year old got a quote of €1k on a 2.2L 2004 320i. Stick in any quotes you get.

I like your idea and thinking but from working in insurance myself i can tell you that those prices mean nothing.

It only takes one variable to make a 500euro price difference. And its happened to me from changing a model from SE to SEL for example. And that's on top of prices changing depending on time of year and location based premiums.

The list of variables is just to big to try get an average price etc.

I got insured on a Subaru at 19, s3 at 21 and 530d at 22. I have no claims since I was 17 though and always had own policy so that helped.

Yup that's me. I'm with Aviva and they always give me a quote. It might be ridiculous but at least the offer is there.

Who insured you on the S3 as a matter of interest?

Liberty afaik, 3 or 4 years ago at this stage. It was a battle but got insured in the end, used the old well I've bought the car and I'm in the arsehole of Mayo needing to drive to Westmeath line. No extra charge either, I've never being outrightly refused insurance and always had quick enough cars. I was coming from a mk2 gti 16v at that stage too which suprisingly they don't idn't bat an eyelid at when I bought it.
