I couldn't find any posts about this film.

It's based on the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson, Robin Wright, Jason Clarke, John Hawkes and Michael Kelly.

Out on the 18th of September.

Looks like a film that'd be great to see in IMAX if only we bloody had one here

The book,Into Thin Air is well worth checking out (written by Michael Kelly's character in the film who also wrote Into the Wild). I'm not sure if this is a direct adaptation or not, Anatoli Boukreev also wrote a book about that day but his name is well down the character list.

Went to see this this morning. Thought it was decent.

It has a stellar cast but they're all pretty much under utilized.

Saw this last night and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I was thinking the say after tomorrow or some other disaster movie type, but it's not that at all. Very realistic. I didn't know anything about the story so I went in not knowing the outcome. I won't say anything just in case others aren't familiar with what happened but suffice to say it wasn't what I expected. Jason clarke is brilliant though, he gives a great performance and I hope he gets an oscar nod. Lake glynahal is good too but thus us the kind of thing he does in his sleep.
    Very good film. 4/5

    Enjoyed this a lot.

But found Guillenhall and Sam Worthingtons parts pretty useless and meaningless.

As someone said they were underused. Unknown actors would have pulled it off the same.

    But its great overall.

+1 great read, sounds like the movie's somewhat living up to the book

Just in from seeing this, knew nothing about the story before going and have to say I was extremely pleasantly surprised. Altogether an excellent effort, some fantastic scenes and a couple of great performances.

    Would highly recommend viewing.

Keira's kiwi accent was pretty good too.

Really enjoyed this. Knew nothing about it going in (ie who lives or dies) so it was absolutely riveting

The same. Glad I didn't know it was based on a real expedition/book, or I'd have probably looked it up. Film was better for not knowing.

Am going to read the book(s) about this in the future, would like to get that side of it now too and see how much creative license was used.

For a film that was been touted as a "Blockbuster" going by it's trailer, it's more a character driven movie then trailer led on. I loved it although it's a pretty bleak watch and leaves you on a downer.

I do think some of the cast is a little under used, especially Robin Wright as Brolin's Wife. Although some actors do a lot with the little they are given Jake Gyllenhaal
I had a feeling he was dying in this early as his name isn't top billing but I thought he gave a good performance
and Kiera Knightley, with a great New Zealand accent to boot puts in a good shift as Clarke's pregnant wife. Even Sam Worthington gives his best performance to date in this. I thought Josh Brolin and John Hawkes
His character's death was the most hard hitting
gave very good performances. Emily Watson also stood out. Jason Clarke gave a great lead performance. Not a dud performance from the pack and it is a character drama with disaster movie.

It really delivered on IMAX, although there isn't a lot of action. Half the film pretty much deals with the gang and them training and bonding, but when it gets to the them climbing Everest, it's really makes it worth it as you actually care for these people.

    It's not a easy watch
The way some of the characters death just come and go, especially Hawkes, Clarkes and Gyllenhaal just comes and goes and you get no build up it's just all sudden and then it's gone
make's it more hard hitting. Even the ending
Even with Brolin's character surviving, he lost both hands and his nose. Clarke's character dies and none of the other guy's bodies are even found. Is a bit of a downer
that takes some balls for a big time studio even make this.

But this a great true story and well acted and thoughtful and pretty scary Drama. Well worth seen just don't go in expect smiles and thrills.

Try reading 'Left for Dead' the book Beck Weathers wrote after the '96 season.

Haven't seen this yet but have read Into Thin air and other books about the 1996 disaster. Jon Krakauer has criticised this movie for straying too far from what actually happened.

While this wouldn't necessarily impact my enjoyment of this as a movie if you are interested in finding out what happened it wpuld pay to do a bit of background reading.

Having said that JK's own accounts of what happened have also been disputed by others who were there.

All of which is to say that you can't really read or watch one side of the story and take that as fact. But hopefully will be an enjoyable movie.

I didn't even know it was known as a disaster till after the movie.

You'd have to be a bit mad to try to climb it I reckon. I read on the wiki page the expeditions of the kind Hall lead were criticised since it meant amateurs with little climbing experience could attempt things they probably shouldn't.

Really enjoyed this and particularly enjoyed that there are few small storyline strands that are left unfinished. It might frustrate some but I felt it added to the mystery and tragedy of the story. Naturally I assume that this is because there are varying accounts of what actually happened, nobody to verify certain parts etc that these issues aren't fully rounded out.

Stellar performances from all of the cast and Emily Watson really stands out. As cliché as it sounds, Everest itself is a fantastic character and the ominous nature of it is portrayed fantastically.

Not a 3D fan at all but would recommend 3D for this as some of the visuals really are stunning. There are a few scenes early on when you the 'edges' of the mountain (where people are standing) are given fantastic perspective against the drop when viewed in 3D.

As a previous poster mentioned, it is a pretty bleak watch but enthralling viewing.

Saw this last night having previously read "Into Thin Air". Knowing what was going to happen didn't take anything away from the film and I think it allowed me to pick up on subtleties that are given only cursory nods in the film.

Watched it on the "IMAX" screen in Cineworld and the visuals and sound are stunning. The cinema experience adds a lot to it but I think the plot holds up on its own as a thrilling story. Some great acting too.

Surprised to see that this thread is still on it's first page of posts. We went to see it at the weekend and thought it was great. Visually it's stunning and the sound editing just knocks you back. The barrage of sounds as the storms pass through is intense. For a movie that's not in any way heavy on action it is edge of the seat stuff at times. A lot of that was probably down to the great cast and how character oriented it was. Even the "simple" tasks like crossing the ladders was nerve-wracking and would give you vertigo. One of the things I really liked about it was just seeing what base camp life was like, what was involved with training and what the actual climb entails. The deaths too were so quiet and real... it hit home harder than if there was some dramatic landslide set-piece. Overall, a bit of a surprise hit for me and glad I went to see it on the big screen.

Just watched this. Very good movie. Scenery was beautiful and it was well acted out. Thought Jason Clarke was excellent.
