riding wide and poorly designed bicycle lanes

    I came across this video which demonstrates two problems. 1) Bike lanes right a row of parked cars were it looks as if an opened car door would completely block the lane and 2) the driver not aware of said hazard for the cyclist and the potential for the cyclist to end up under the car.

    Now if the cyclist was to choose to cycle on the road or outside of the lane... could you be fined for this?

    To elaborate a little: no, cycle lanes are not mandatory, whereas the Roads Act requires that you do not put yourself or other road users in danger. Riding in cycle lanes like would be a blatant disregard of that law.

    worth noting that the video was shot in London, where the legislation may differ.

    there's no 'compulsory use' legislation in Ireland, but their might be over the water.
