Motor Tax and Insurance Policy?

Hey guys wondering can anyone clarify this for me.

I sold my car to my brother and he needs to tax it, but he is under my mothers insurance policy as a named driver. Can I register him as the owner and let him tax it or does it have to change the log book ownership under my mothers name?

    Any help appreciated.

If your brother is a named driver on your mother's policy it won't be insured to drive your car. You will need to transfer the car ownership to him and he can then take out an insurance policy in his own name.

Cool so a named driver cannot be the registered owner of a car (i.e. liable for tax)?

No they can be liable for tax, they just won't be insured.

The insurance is only valid if the car is registered under your mother's name and insured by her, as he is a named driver on her policy.

Open drive or third party extension usually doesn't cover named drivers.

Only real solution is for your brother to get his own insurance policy on the car.

Also note that an insurance policy covers the vehicle, not the person.

So if your mother has an insurance policy on her current car and you transfer your car into her name, her current insurance policy will not cover her on your car. And by extension, it will not cover your brother on it.

If your brother needs to be insured on the car, then there needs to be an active policy on that car, with your brother's name on it either as the primary driver or a named driver.

You also do not need insurance to tax a car. Go online, get the PIN, when it asks for the insurer select "other" and put in garbage for the policy number.
