    Hi,

I am moving to Luxembourg. I plan to drive across and scrap the car within the first month.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get the car officially scrapped in Ireland?

    Thanks,

if it's that bad are you sure it will make it?

out of interest what is it?

    Hi racso1975,

Its a 2003 Suzuki Lianna... its just past its nct and going fine... but not worth a whole pile.

I would rather be driving a left hand drive car over there... and its not worth driving the Liana back to Ireland.

A bit of lateral thinking here, but why don't you put up a post in motors (if the mods allow): "Suzuki Liana, NCT, €300, have to collect in Luxembourg"

That should attract some attention :D

Someone with a bit of time on their hands could make the trip and earn a few bucks and you'll get more than the car is worth in scrap. Win win :)

I'm confused as to how I make money....by the time I put fuel in it tolls and ferry back?

I don't know what kind of import taxes Luxembourg has or the price of second hand cars compared to here. But there is a lot of lhd cars on donedeal atm for peanuts. Might be worth selling the liana and buying a lhd yoke here to drive over?

    Not much money obviously

I'm thinking cheap Ryanair flight over plus hitching / public transport. Cheap ferries, no need to use tolled roads. Stay over in cheap motel. Petrol shouldn't be much more than €100 (fill up in Luxembourg, about the cheapest petrol in Europe)

Sell Liana for about a grand here - make maybe €200-€300 untaxed profit for 2 days work with the roadtrip / adventure / holiday thrown in for free :)

    Guys,

The car is 12 years old... Its coming to the end of its useful life. Nobody wants to risk driving an unknown car back from Luxembourg... Just cause I say its good... You would have to be mad to risk it.

I have contacted the Dept. of Transport as to what I need to do when scrapping the car the abroad.

When I get the information I will post back.

    Thanks,

Up to you of course, but if the car has just passed it's NCT, it's more than likely a good few years away from the end of its useful life.

Saves you hassle too. As soon as you sign the car over, it's no longer your problem
You would have to be mad to risk it.

Do you accept my challenge to prove me wrong? :)

As in, post up a new thread (with mod approval of course) and see if someone will bite?

He said it's past its NCT, not it had passed its NCT

I take that to mean NCT is up?

You might have to promise marriage and citizenship to some of the boys in Calais! Worth a few bob surely ;-)

Sorry but this forum doesn't allow car sale adverts.
Donedeal/Adverts/Carzone etc are your best bet.

You can also register to some L-bourg expat sites and see how others have fared or if one of them would be interested in buying it to get home to Ireland again.

The car has a valid NCT til June... But its old and tired and dinged up. It would be too big a risk for somebody to risk driving it back from Ireland in the hope of making €200. I wouldn't do it to the person, I would feel bad if they broke down in the middle of France.

Thanks for the suggestions but if I thought the car had any real value I would sell it in Ireland beforehand. It doesn't and I think its best to be scrapped.

Where in Luxembourg? How much? Have you got pictures? Has it been reliable for you? When is it available? Milage? Tax?

Never seen a LHD car in Ireland for peanuts. They are generally overpriced in comparison with same RHD models here.

Also, I wouldn't buy a foreign reg LHD here for a reason that cars past is unknown, it could be registered in Interpol system as stolen, there could be outstanding finance or anything else. Also change of ownership in most cases is not that straight forward, so no, this option is bad suggestion imho.

Driving and scraping a car like Liana is really the best option. Or sell it there in Luxembourg for parts.
