    Hi everyone

i currently drive an e90 bmw 3 series 320d with 140k miles on the clock. it runs ok, few bits and pieces to do soon.

I was doing 120km commute motorway/N road for the last number of months, but i will be changing jobs in september and will be only doing 30km per day, m50 mostly.

i cant really afford to change, although a petrol would be nice for the journey, but i dont really have any money to add in.

so, what kind of care should i be taking of the car when im doing the shorter miles?

Keep the same car I would think if money is tight.

If car is 2008+ its a no brainer to keep it

I think you've mis-read the OP. He is asking advice about preventing future car problems due to shorter journeys not about changing car (which he can't afford to do yet).

imo 15km each way is a decent enough trip even on the M50 so just keep driving as you normally do and throw in an occasional blast down the motorway to clear out soot, etc. You can even do this on a slow M50 by keeping to a lower gear (you don't need high speed, just higher revs).

I think a bigger factor determining realiability or "preventing future problems" would be if its and M47 or N47 engine.

An M47 without a DPF would be absolutely fine to run on a 30k commute particularly if it involves motoreay driving.

If its an N47 I'd be more concerned about timing chain issues before anything else to be honest

its an 05. my bad i thought i had mentioned it. therefore its an M47 manual with no dpf.

there is the occasional black smoke when i floor it to 4000 rpm on 2nd or 3rd gear, but i generally do this to have the belief that ive cleared some soot out :)
