Hi the best offer i can get for broadband is on a 3mb connection, would this be good enough to stream live sport without constant buffering?

Maybe if the exchange is NGN, if its an old one though then very unlikely.

Have you tested it yourself if is this just an estimate by the broadband provider?
They probably mean "up to 3mbps" so it wouldn't surprise me if you only get 1.5mbps approx.

Probably an old one if they're selling up to 3 rather than up to 8/24?

I get 2mbps. Its grand for medium quality videos. If there is more than one person watching a video then it just dies a death, its like having dial up all over again screaming at the other person to stop using the line :D

Its 50/50. Its either a legacy exchange OR its NGN and he's 4KM from it.

The max I get is around 2.6MB on a good day due to location.

It's perfect for streaming sports (non-HD) if no one else in the house is streaming/downloading anything, while it's also perfect if you're streaming and others are just browsing Facebook, emails etc. However, if a second person goes on YouTube, starts downloading something etc at the same time then you might as well forget about it.

If you're on your own and/or there's no one else in your household that will do the above when you're watching sport and you actually get 3MB then you'll be fine.

Would they not still sell it as up to 8 and getting 3 though if it was ngn? My mum is on an up to 3mb eircom package where the options are 1,3 and 7 AFAIK.

Yeah, depends on if the OP is talking about the package or the line rating that they'd quote him.
