Passat losing power

I have a 2004 B5 1.9 TDI 130BHP Passat and every now and then, usually at motorway speeds, the car seems to lose a bit of power and stay at the 120 KM/H mark. Foot flat to the floor it just won't budge over that, the turbo just stops kicking in. If I hit any sort of incline the speed drops and just refuses to gain any momentum. If I turn it off for a bit and back on again all is working fine again and I have my turbo power back. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so can anyone tell me what the problem may be or point me in a general direction of figuring it out? Cheers!

Could be coked up turbo if you have the variable nossle type.
I'm no expert in when they were fitted but someone will be along shortly with lots of info im sure.
Best get the codes read anyway and see if it's overboost condition or what.

Had the same problem with my 01 Passat 130bhp, kept losing power, turn engine off/on and it was ok, 3 mechanics said it was the turbo, sticking vans etc etc. Finally found a mechanic who sorted the problem, 'Boost control sensor', cost approx €55, check that before you go forking money turbo

That's great thanks for the help! I'll get a mechanic to have a look at that

Had the same issue with a Passat not long ago. Vacuum pipe going into boost control solenoid had a crack in it which would open up when the engine got hot. Couple of quid for a length of hose and a dirty hand later and she was mad for tar again. Boost control solenoid goes in them too and would give similar issues.

Check the vacuum pipe coming from the air box too. It is are prone to a hole wearing in it, had the same problem on the same engine before and that was the cause. Also fixed another fellas in work a few months later who had the same bother.

Cheers lads appreciate the advice! I'll look into the bits you're talking about.

It also doesn't tend to heat up to the 90 degrees mark, it floats a little under that.. Any chance this could be apart of the problem?

    Maybe Air Flow Mass Meter/Sensor.

Used to have a lot of VW's at work 1.9tdi's and they nearly all suffered failure of these. They are located in the intake to the turbo look like a mesh sieve. Easy to replace we used to swap them on cars ourselves to diagnose if they were gone.

Used to find that you would have "flat spots" in acceleration rather than topping out at 120kms like you describe but similar symthoms

Got it sorted a few weeks ago... Or so I thought. Intercooler pipe was loose basically hanging off) so when I was accelerating, the air was being forced onto the pipe and basically losing vacuum. Then on Saturday the problem happened again.. on the M50, power loss and engine management light came on. Error code is "P0234 Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Overboost Condition". A little bit of research is telling me the veins of the turbo need regeneration/cleaning. Anyone have this issue?

I'll be going to VW specialist when I get a chance so I can get the genuine VAG software on it to confirm

I had this issue on my focus tdci, I had to open up the turbo and clean it out. It was completely full of carbon which wasn't allowing the veins to move.

Had focus going into limp mode. 2 main dealers couldn't find issue.
Diesel mechanic found and replaced "boost pressure control solenoid"
    Problem sorted!!
