The 06 onwards RAV4 is full time 4wd and quite hard on fuel. An old model 2wd 1.8 would be much lighter on petrol.

Rough figures would be that the RAV4 would use 60% more fuel than your focus, also factor in that petrol is roughly 12c a litre more than diesel at the moment.

Should I stay away so. ..?

What's your mileage a day like?
Your going to probably spend more then what your used to spending on petrol.

Entirely up to yourself and what your willing to spend a month/week on fuel.
Your tax will increase slightly also. Not by much mind.

You don't want to spend more than 10-15% more than you do on a diesel focus, so probably!

You'd probably be looking at more than that for the car you are talking about.

If cost of a petrol is an issue then avoid they are thirsty beasts

A 1.6 petrol suzuki vitara or a daihatsu terios would be a bit easier ran and cheaper to tax too. It all depends what you want a small 4x4 for these small engine petrol examples aren't great at pulling but tend to be more reliable than their diesel equivalents.

I had a 2004 1.8 Petrol (2WD) Rav4, and my MPG calculations always brought me in and around 21-23mpg (I'd guess I was doing about 70% town driving, 30% motorway/longer journeys).

I'm currently in an 01 1.6 Petrol Focus estate and although I haven't worked out the MPG, I find the focus' running costs are scarily lower than the Rav's. I also had a 2.0ltr Diesel 407, and I'd almost bet that my Focus is somehow cheaper to run than that was!

So if you're driving a Mk1 Focus, it's possibly going to scare you how much more a 2.0ltr petrol Rav (With permanent 4WD) would cost in fuel alone (though I thought the 2006 onwards petrols were 2.2ltrs?). Personally, I wouldn't touch a petrol SUV/Jeep after having the Rav4 (but then I've never owned a diesel SUV/Jeep so can't really comment if there's much difference in real life between Petrol/Diesel in them in general).

A 1.6 vitara is an awful hape though. The older model anyway and it will fall over if you pull any decent size trailer with it
