Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Newspaper Advertising Slump Accelerates

The Guardian, Trinity Mirror and Daily Mail have all suffered big print advertising declines in H1 2015. Digital advertising is not even coming close to compensating for the declines. Seems that one of the reasons is that there is less supermarket advertising in old media UK newspapers, not certain if that is being replicated here, Aldi and Lidl still seem to be virtually funding IN&M these days.

The death spiral of old media continues ...

Trinity Mirror profits slip due to print ad slump and phone-hacking costs

The fall in profits came despite cost cutting and digital growth, which failed to offset continuing declines in print advertising. Revenues were £288.5m, down 8.7% from the same period of 2014 as print advertising, particularly from supermarkets, fell 19% to £87.7. Digital advertising rose almost 26% to £16.6.

Daily Mail suffers 15pc print advertising slump as supermarkets cut back

A “marked deterioration” in the traditional advertising market resulted in a 15pc fall in print advertising at the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, prompting a sell-off of shares in the titles' parent company, DMGT.

    Interesting stuff.
    On the New York Times:

Digital comprised 32.5% of total ad revenue at the company, up from 26.9%, as digital ad revenue rose 14.2% to $48.3 million. Print ad revenue losses again overwhelmed the digital gains, however, falling 12.8% for an overall advertising drop of 5.5%.

They now have 900,000 digital subscribers.

    And.....

The NYT is loosing print and gaining digital at a rate of 2/1 - $2 lost in print replaced by $1 added in digital - which is not bad considering the Mirror Group is 5/1 and DMGT is 7/1.

Interesting. The NYT, FT, WSJ and The Economist obviously sit in a league of their own with print revenue to digital revenue conversion ratios. They are not indicative of the market as a whole.

    Oh - I hate that!

I spent some time in the systems end of publications - many a late night would you would catch copy from across the pond ending up in an ROI edition with 'Our Boys' referring to the UK Army in some skirmish or another.

Also had to be careful when it came to England playing the foreign game - copy was always hazardous - 'the 'we' had to be well washed out of the stories.

I've heard from an insider that the Irish Times new pay-wall is failing catastrophically to counter falling circulation.

Not sure how much the resurgence in property porn supplements is compensating....

Not surprised. The muppetry failed once before so they cluelessly try it again in a market where the IT's brand of commentary is even more irrelevant. The problem for the IT isn't that its paywall is failing. The problem is that the IT is failing. It is failing to get new readers and its old ones are not buying the newspaper at the same rate.
