Does your phone have GPS? Use Strava, if so. You can upload your ride when you get home, assuming you have an internet connection at home which your phone can use.

Runtastic (they make a bike version) is the only offline map package that I know off. I use it myself and find it very good.

Search for Mobile Atlas Creator. You can download the likes of OpenStreetMap and reformat for your device. I use SportsTracker on my phone. Many of the apps will allow you to avoid downloading maps as you ride.

This. No need to use data when out and about. Your gps data will be saved and you can just upload when you get a wifi connection

The problem is most apps without data won't display maps.

You are correct if you choose an app that has online maps only i.e. Download and display tiles on demand

If you choose an app with offline maps, all the downloading is done ahead of time and controlled by you, so you download when you are connected to wifi.

One easy way to know, if the app uses OpenStreetMap, it can do offline or online, if it uses Google maps, its online only

yeah but most of the trackers (strava, etc) use their own mapping, not another app. Runtastic is the only one I found where you could download a mapped area to view offline.

Strava uses Google maps. works perfectly offline.
