Professional House Painting

I'm looking for a painter to paint my windows and doors (external work only) but I don't want someone who's not qualified. But how do you know? They all say they're qualified and have done their apprenticeship - then they make a mess of your house.
And how much per hour should I pay a painter?

    I'm in Dublin.

Ask for their degree certificate and check it's at least a 2.2. :pac:

Basically get a recomendation off someone. I personally use a certain website easily found via google or ask here. They don't usually charge per hour but quote for the job. Get atleast three quotes and go with the middle one.

Most painters price the job, they don't get paid hourly. Some might charge by the day.
Most people go off recommendations but open the Golden Pages and choose from there.
You can't really go wrong with professional companies or painters you've been recommended.

What reg is the Van Ceepo? :pac:

Taken as tongue in cheek here. Have to say though it is something I look at. If it's an utter shed it does make you wonder.

    And taken that way.

I suppose there are a few ways of looking at it.
One of the best painters living around these parts drives a car and has no van at all. But has 35 years experience and all his work is 1st class. One other guy I know drives a 142 and I honestly wouldn't let him near a dog house.
Both of these are competing for the same work and if both are similar in price one of the is finished before the other so he can afford a new van.
Another way to look at it is if some one is pricing and getting work and sub letting he might be driving test new van, can't vouch for the quality of work.
Personally I am pricing against lads on the dole and others who are doing it for a fraction of the price, maybe that's why I don't the a new van ;)

I always go for the middle quote, New van would raise as many alarm bells and a shed TBH. I'm pretty lucky in being able to spot a bull****er being one myself!

Funny you should mention no van. They guy I use drives a clapped out Beemer, does great work!

Get recommendations from paint shops and get price for job, (never by hour or day). That way you know where you stand.

152 van! 2 bozo's round here never served their time to the trade have one,the dole threw money at them for setting up business, money for van, advertising, equipment, insurance and no tax payments for 3 years along with getting a percentage of dole. yet the guy with all the cert's and qualifications...can't drive!

Ask to see some of their previous work. Also make sure that they are going to prep properly and sand all surfaces down, be specific about what you need painted. Not much point painting a room if they leave out the skirting boards and door frames which happened to a friend of mine. Painting takes time, a good job anyways so if someone's doing the work super fast I'd be wary of it. I have a good recommendation I can pm if you like.
