    Quick question :

Does the pdf or the rdf let members take any of their gear with them when they retire?or does it all have to be handed in? Thanks

I think the gear is always property of the Defence Forces, and thus you have to give it back, but some people I heard of, who were in the FCA just didn't turn up one weekend, and kept their clothes.

Heard a few lads on about how you used to be able to keep some gear in the fca/rdf, must've just "forgotten" to bring it back i suppose

I seem to recall being told of PAs going out and taking stuff back off people but I'd say its not something that happened very often.

I think there are formal regulations regarding the disposal of uniforms - so for dress unifoms buttons and lapels etc are supposed to be cut off. Not sure if that kind of thing was updated after combats came in.

I discharged myself from the RDF recently and I had to hand back all my gear because that is part of the discharge process.
