I'm under 18 working part time for the summer. I work two or three 8 hour shifts a week in minimum wage. On my payslip it shows that I am paying both USC and PAYE. I thought I pay no tax as I'm under 18. Can I claim back all of this tax?

You pay Income Tax and USC just like anybody else. You pay no PRSI only if you're under 16.

PAYE tax can be reclaimed and USC may be claimed back if your total income for the year is below the threshold.

I'd suggest signing up to PAYE Anytime...or when you finish work for the summer, visit your local tax office (you won't be able to claim anything back until you finish work for the summer).

Ring the tax office and ask them to put your tax and usc on a cumulative basis. If you are only working part time during the summer you are probably have sufficient credits to cover your income. If you are due a refund it will be processed in your next payroll.

    Hi
I am seventeen years old and work a part time job on the weekends and holidays. I pay USC and PRSI and was wondering if I can claim either of these taxes back as I am under 18. I do not pay PAYE as far as I know. What does it mean if my total income for the year is below the threshold? Or how do I know if it is below the threshold?
    Thanks,
    Ellie

You pay the USC if your gross income is more than ?13,000 per year. (This limit was ?10,036 from 2012 to 2014 and ?12,012 in 2015). Once your income is over this limit, you pay the relevant rate of USC on all of your income. It is calculated on a weekly or monthly basis.

At minimum wage or close to you're very unlikely to earn 13k in a calendar year so should get it back.

Sign up for PAYE anytime and keep the login details safe. Then in January 2018 you can apply for a P21 Balancing Statement on the website (a few clicks) and they'll put all the USC back into your bank account in a few days. Think of it as a nice January bonus.
