Renewing SEP Class rating

    Hi there...

Quick question for you all. My SEP Class rating is due for renewal in May 2016. My Class 2 Medical has also run out.

I'm thinking of doing a 'lesson' in a different type of aircraft when I'm away on holidays next month, just a chance to fly again (and see that part of the world from the air) before throwing myself back into flying to renew my Rating when I get back.

I know I don't need my Medical to do a lesson with someone, but am I able to log the hour towards my 12 hours for renewal? Or do I have to have my Medical renewed before I can log the hour? I know when you first start lessons it's common to do a couple and then the Medical, and those couple of lessons are still logged towards your hours.

I've no problem doing the Medical, and clearly I will do it soon, just trying to see if I have to do it before I go away.

    Thanks...

    J.

If you fly with a flight instructor, then you can log these hours as Dual without a valid med cert, however to renew the SEP rating, out of those 12 hours at least 6 need to be as PIC - you need your med cert to fly as PIC.

Make sure your FI signs your logbook including his (hers) licence number. If you're not flying with a licensed FI, then you can't count these hours - technically you are either a PIC or a pax at that stage
