So im having an ongoing debate with a friend on sceniro's where the guy/woman working should/shouldnt wash their hands

1/ local petrol station, a quiet one...the owner was out smoking, second i walked in i could smell it, she saw me and rushed back in behind the counter, she didnt wash her hands p.s this is 8pm with no deli open

2/ walking into the barbers, guy was outside smoking, he sees me, finishes his fag, doesnt wash his hands and starts to cut my hair..its a turkish barbers where they do all the face massage and stuff with haircut

Im not a smoker i think on both cases they should wash their hands..my mate disagrees

Help settle and arguement between me and this ginger pr!ck

Hospitals, after petting animals, bathroom business. Common sense stuff. Dont see a need for after smoking

Not really a big deal and I am a manic hand washer...if they were in the deli then yes, but handling money is way dirtier than smoking - and i am a non- and anti-smoke.r

the smell alone would make me ask whoever had their hands near my face/food to wash.

I'm a smoker and I'd wash my hands after a cigarette but that's because I hate the smell just as much as any non-smoker and also to avoid the dreaded yellow fingers.

No, because their hands don't come into contact with the smoke.

You probably unknowingly drag your face through cigarette smoke outside pubs and shops every day but you wouldn't expect people to ask you to wash your face if your job involved rubbing your face on them... actually, that's a stupid thing to say on reflection. I honestly thought I had a point here, but clearly I don't. If anything I have inadvertently strengthened the OP's argument here, something which I had not set out to do at all. I have a made a fool of myself in all honesty and it's probably for the best that I just stopped talking

if the cigarrette is in their hand how can it NOT come into contact with smoke?

    this

It doesn't actually matter now as by your own standards, it doesn't seem to have occurred to you that you could have gone elsewhere.

For future reference though, I would expect that both people in those scenarios wouldn't smoke anywhere near their workplaces, it simply looks terrible and gives a bad impression of the place. Washing their hands or not would be the least of my worries compared to what else I'd be thinking they wouldn't do, like washing their hands after visiting the bathroom.

Three things here , all easily solved.

Regarding the petrol station owner, next time she's smoking as you appear , throw some petrol at her. She will soon realise the risks of smoking and petrol.

In relation to the Turkish barber, stop eating turkey for Christmas.

The "ginger prick " not as important but see point one regarding petrol being thrown at him.

Years ago I was putting my self through proctology school by working at a sandwich shop.

Nothing gross or untoward ever happened though so I don't know why I'm even mentioning it in a thread about hand washing.

I'm quite fascinated by this one. Is it that you think your money will smell of tobacco smoke, and you don't want that?

Surely you would want that as it would give your money an air of sophistication.

Might mix bad when snorting cocaine.

After smoking because your fingers are in in contact with your lips and then potentially with food after. That's why it's frowned upon. Wouldn't be too fussed about the barber though.

You can't wash away the feeling of shame.

Would have thought washing your hands after smoking/eating/touching your hair/before you touch someone else was standard practice??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,095 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Come to think of it i would not want a hairdresser / smoker cutting my hair, but because they would be breathing smokey breath.

The only thing she'll realise is that real life isn't like Con Air, where petrol is ignited by a cigarette.

Do you wash your hands after fighting with a Ginger Prick.

    I would.

If there was no deli open, I don't see an issue. She wasn't handling any food, just coins. Now if she worked in a deli, certainly she should, not just because she's been touching something that's decidedly not sterile, but also because a smoker is raising their hands to their mouth, which is a no-no when dealing with food for other people. Besides, I would assume in that situation there wasn't a sink behind the counter. She would probably have had to keep you waiting and also go out of sight of the till, which would both be black marks.

In terms of the barber, it would have been appropriate to wash his hands, I reckon. He should be washing his hands and cleaning his instruments between clients anyway. And hairdressing is quite personal, insofar as you're touching someone. Whether hair or facial hair, it'd certainly give a better impression to show he cares about hygiene.
