My partner is receiving sick pay from social welfare now for 15 months. He has an injury from an accident 10 years ago which has made doing his job very difficult and painful and is awaiting an operation to allow him to return to work.

He received a letter from social welfare this morning stating they have been "asked to arrange for you to be medically assessed by a medical assessor of the department" and have arranged an appointment. It is unlikely he'd receive a letter from the hospital in time, what other documents could/should we bring.

Generally, anything relative to his claim that helps to confirm what he is saying about his injury. If he even has a letter confirming that he is waiting for surgery on the injury that would help.

The purpose of the exam is to determine his fitness or otherwise for work as at the day of the examination.

Check with your GP too. I think that they write to your GP before the examination and ask him to complete and return a form about your injuries, treatment and relevant medical details.

I would advise you after the examination is completed to write to the department seeking a copy of all documents relative to the examination under the Freedom of Information Acts. It costs you nothing except the price of a stamp. Wait for about 4 weeks after the examination.

    Best of luck.

Thank you, thats very helpful. We'll start calling the hospital, Dr and specialists on Tuesday and even if they can only email us letters SW might accept them.

RPleasedont be overly concerned, these medical assessors are experts and very helpful. Visited one when I wanted to return to work (whilst pregnant and ill!) but was told under no circumstances :) They are not out to catch anyone out but have a duty of care to both sides. Genuinely ill have nothing to fear in my experience.Best of luck.
