Looking at spending a few days here in September, and a trip to the Eagle's Nest too. Done a bit of looking about on the interweb and there's a tour up there from a company called Viator for €53pp - takes about 3-4 hours I think. I used em before for a walking tour in Berlin and they were very good.

I stayed closed to Salzburg (on the German side) for 2 weeks 2 years ago

Something I would recommend is to visit the Konigsee and get a boat ride over to St. Bartholomew Church (great food!) and there is a few nice shortish walks around the place.

In Salzburg I would also recommend Hellbrunn Palace, we went with the kids (who thought it was going to be boring but I kept the secret about the trick gardens - they had a great time)

The zoo is nearby Hellbrunn Palace also as well as some of the scenes from the sounds of music (the pavillion I think(I dont know it was something the missus wanted to do :D)
I would recommend also Festung Hohensalzburg, but this might be tough if not too mobile but some fantastic views of Salzburg from the top of the Fortress

Your Dad might like Hohenwerfen Castle which is a bit out from Salzburg, fantastic castle etc, once again mobility might be an issue but I highly recommend it (it was Where Eagles Dare was filmed)

Also Hallstadt is a beautiful place to visit but once again a good bit outside Salzburg

    (I was driving :))

However viatour may organise trips to some of these places and definitely would recommend them also (I did Neuschwanstein Castle) with them a few years ago and couldnt recommend the tour more,

    Hope this helps
    Toppy

Toppy, the person asking for advice for their parents asked 9 years ago so I'm sure the mobility of their parents is not an issue, seeing as the trip is long over.

    Nevertheless, good advice.
I've yet to get to Hallstatt which indeed is supposed to be really nice.

I went to the Eagle's Nest with Gray Line Munich. The tour and particularly the guide were excellent. If Gray Line Salzburg's Eagle's Nest tour are anything like the tour from Munich I highly recommend it.

viator are only re-selling the grey line tours and adding a few euro for themselves as a hidden booking fee
you can book directly from Greyline here:
    http://www.grayline.com/tours/munich/salzburg-and-the-lake-district-5868_11/
    or for eagle nest thingie
    http://www.grayline.com/tours/munich/berchtesgaden-and-eagles-nest-5868_6/

I did a trip to Berchtesgaden by bus once and got stuck in a chronic traffic jam coming back. The Salzburg tour has the advantage that they take a spin round the countryside nearby for a bit of sightseeing, but for the eagles nest youre nearly as handy to take the train.

But then I would nearly say to head on the train to Salzburg, look about and stay overnight. Next day put luggage in a locker in Salzburg station, go the few miles to Berchesgaden and do your stuff and head back to Munich via salzburg.
If you look at a map you'll see it makes sense !
