Starting New Job - Other Offer After

    Hi all,

I will be starting a new job in the next couple of weeks.

At this time i understand that another job which i interviewed for at the same time will be making a decision within 1 month of me starting this job.

Between the two, my preference would be for the latter and i do think that i will be offered the position.

Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this? If i get this offer, should i tell them that i have started another job as surely they would find out when they check references?

Obviously, i would like to take it as it would have been my first choice and will be a significant salary increase and more inline with my long term goals.

Could any shed some light on what kind of ramifications i should expect or some advice on how to handle it with my current employers as i would not like to leave on bad terms.

    Thanks.

Ask the new job can they make a decision sooner. If not wait and see. If the you get offered the latter job, and money is good, and its what you want, just quit your new job and take the one you want. While it's not ideal, it's your career, with such a short time you will be able to omit the job you took from your cv and no one will ever be none the wiser.
Only downside is if the sector you work in is very small will you do damage to your rep. Probably not .

Be straight with them and tell them you are very interested but you have bother offer and must make a decision before whatever the date is.
If however you don't have a decision by the start date then you you need to decide do you decline the offer you have and run the risk of being left with nothing, which is something I wouldn't do in a million years.

Have already tried to suss it out but the people involved are off on AL so no decision will be forthcoming until they are back so they said anywhere from 2-4 weeks which means i will have definitely started the new job by that point.

I am curious what that would mean for references, if i get offered the job, should i tell them that i started a new role recently so they are aware when they check my old references?

Thanks, obviously i am aware that this may cause some adverse damage to my reputation but this job would be a 50% pay increase on what i earned in old job and still a good 25% bump on what i am on at present so i hope they are understanding about it as it's not something that was planned. The other company is just taking a ridiculous amount of time to come back with a decision.

start the job and leave it if the other one comes up.

You'll be on a probation period anyway that allows for one weeks notice on both sides. Ask yourself the question, if any company needed to get rid of you for any reason during your probation period at short notice what would they do? The mightn't feel comfortable about it but you'd be gone. Exactly how you will feel.

50% pay rise in a area of industry you see yourself going into full time - no brainer
