But seriously it depends what type of whiskey they like, scotch, irish, american, japanese, etc?

Apart from the obvious gift of a great whiskey how about some really fancy whiskey glasses, a pewter serving measure or a hip flask?

Glencairn Glasses and a nice single malt like Laphroaig

The Islay whiskies are an acquired taste. I find some of those smoky ones near undrinkable. You'd want to be sure of the kind of whisk(e)y the receiver likes.

Middleton or bush mills is a good choice

I got a bottle of Bowmore recently, wasn't too smoky, was spot on actually.

    Maybe an expensive crystal tumbler?

There's the Dingle Whiskey Bar on Nassau Street if you're in Dublin, you could take your friend in, they might have a whiskey tasting or something he could do in there. Or they might have other nick nacks you could give.

Not sure I'd be a fan of those tbh. Potential choking hazard after one too many drams I reckon.

I love them, chill without diluting

Used to leave my whiskey in the freezer for a couple of hours before I got them :o

They barely chill the whiskey at all, though. The main chilling comes from the endothermic reaction of melting, not "touching something cold"

I find them a gimmick, nothing else.

Decent glasses is the best suggestion for if you don't know what they like. If you do know, a decent bottle is probably ideal

Chances are they probably have glasses. Chances are they'll appreciate a bottle, but will already have some bottles at home.

Maybe a trip to the Jameson distillery, or a voucher for a whiskey tasting course, or something a little more unique?

Can go wrong with a voucher for the Whiskey Store on Dawson St.
