Ive to update heating form a Baxty all in one fireplace/gas boiler combo to something fuel efficient and Im considering options.

Are back boiler passé ? I seud to be in charge if stretching a bag of coal with slack as a kid and I was very good at it.

Id like to be able to burn my own fuel (logs and coal solid fuel)

if you have free firewood it might make some sense.

The problem seems to be that it will cost you at least a thousand euros and probably more to plumb the back boiler to the heating in a way that is both safe and fuel efficient.

It will take quite a bit of free firewood to make up this amount. Added to that you have all the labour and ash disposal issues of solid fuel which don't arise with gas.

You might be better committing the extra money to other insulation projects. You can still use the fireplace to provide heat in one part of the house.

I have a back boiler and also an oil heating system.. Someone said that it's not possible to use both at the same time? Is it best to remove the back boiler?

It is possible to use them both at the same time. The problem arises if you want to modernise the system.
