Cost of new brake calipers - MR2

Hey lads, I need to get my rear brake calipers replaced. '94, 2.0 n/a.

I'd just like and idea of what this should be costing before I head off and spend mad money. I had a price of around €100 a pop in my head, am I living in fantasy land?

Recommendations of who'd be the best to do these for me, (south dublin preferably) would be great too.

I would imagine them being more expensive than that, give Toyota parts a call, you would be surprised how reasonable some of the prices are.

i'd be thinking the calipers themselves will cost between €100-150 each + fitting.

those calipers are also probably on the back of pretty much every 90's toyota so it may be possible to get a functional second hand set for considerably less which could still give years of good service after a clean and grease. i'd be checking the part number vs an ae111 levin and a 6th gen celica for sure.

Micks Garage (always dearer than my local motor factors) are doing the front's for an SW20 for €133 each, i know size isn't everything, but i would be expecting the rears to be a shade cheaper than that.

i take it the OP wouldn't be buying from Toyota.

I remember there last year when i needed a caliper for the front of my Corolla, i think i was looking €250+ from Mr. T and i got one for €120 all in from Ashgrove Interparts.

Thanks a mil, got a quote from Fast fit for €235 each including fitting. I usually trust the lads in there so might just go with them. Waiting on another guy I use to get back to me too. I might give the breakers yards in Dun Laoghaire a shout. Worth the call at least.

I had my is200 fail a nct on a caliper that was stuck and I sourced a used one for €60 and cost me €50 labour in the local garage.

TFB the rear calipers are bigger on the sw20 than the fronts;)

and OP a freind of mine broke a 95 sw20 na recently Ill send him a quick message asking if he has 2 good calipers to try save you some of your hard earned dosh.. he is a mechanic and could change them for you too. your in dublin somewhere afik?

I left it in this morning to have the rear brake pads replaced, had them checked yesterday as I thought they might be down to the discs. Got the call about the calipers seizing told them I'd pick it up and make a few calls etc. The car came back worse than I left it.

It's now with another guy, who I should have just left it with in the first place tbh. He's going to see if he can release the calipers - has done it on plenty of cars apparently. I'll be keeping my eye out for used parts though, because it is the one thing that I will probably need to replace at some point even if not today.

And so it begins.....the heartache and money pit that is a MKII MR2.....

have you not tried these guys. I got two re conditioned calipers for a Toyota Avensis from them last year. They took the old ones as part exchange. Based in Finglas behind Denis Mahony

Managed to release the calipers, so all sorted for now. I've been reliably informed there's an MR2 for breaking nearby so I might go take a look.

Lesson learned. In fairness, the lad working on it yesterday probably wasn't as old as the car

+1 for this. The braking system from the Corolla has a lot of common parts with the MR2.

I used the rebuild kit to renew all the brakes on my MK1 MR2. Its a bit fiddly, but it will save you a lot of money.

I used Camskill when I did my own. They have refurbished calipers for approx. €150 depending on model.
